Xandikos is a self-hosted server for calendars and contacts: it provides CalDAV and CardDAV services and stores data in Git repositories. Its Git-backed history is a distinctive choice for people who want repository-based data management, but “complete” should not be read as support for every WebDAV extension. The project marks multi-user support as experimental, and operators remain responsible for secure deployment.
What Xandikos does
The Xandikos project describes itself as “a lightweight yet complete CardDAV/CalDAV server that backs onto a Git repository.” In practical terms, it lets compatible calendar and contacts clients access data over CalDAV and CardDAV while the server keeps that data in Git. The project says its CalDAV implementation follows RFC 4791 and its CardDAV implementation follows RFC 6352. Xandikos project repository
Git-backed storage is the central differentiator: calendar and contact data lives in repositories rather than being treated only as ordinary files or a database. That can suit administrators who value repository-based history and workflows. It also means Xandikos is not just a client-side sync utility; it is a server that must be deployed and maintained.
How complete is its protocol support?
“Complete” is the project’s positioning, not a guarantee that every DAV-related standard or extension is implemented. The repository lists full CalDAV and CardDAV implementations, but it also documents exceptions and partial support.

| CardDAV (RFC 6352) | Fully implemented, according to the project repository. |
| WebDAV core | Supported, with LOCK operations excepted, according to the project repository. |
| Access control | Listed as partial by the project repository. |

| WebDAV Quota (RFC 7529) | Not implemented, according to the project repository. |
If a particular client or organization depends on an extension, check that requirement against the project’s current feature list before migrating. The project website has older limitations that conflict with the repository on multi-user and scheduling support, so the repository is the more relevant source for those current project claims. Multi-user use and scheduling
The repository describes multi-user support as experimental. That is an important qualification if several people need separate accounts, permissions, or shared calendars: do not assume the maturity or access-control behavior of a production groupware service. Evaluate your intended account and sharing model before relying on it.

For outbound scheduling, the repository says remote iMIP delivery is disabled by default and describes configuring delivery through sendmail or SMTP. This concerns sending scheduling messages; it is separate from ordinary calendar synchronization. Xandikos project repository
Clients and compatibility
The project’s repository lists DAVx5, Evolution, Apple iOS, Thunderbird, and vdirsyncer among clients it has tested. Treat that as Xandikos’s own compatibility list, not as independent confirmation that every current version or configuration works. Client behavior can depend on versions, server settings, and the features you use.

Before moving important data, test the specific calendar and contacts clients you plan to use. Verify the operations that matter to you—such as creating and editing events, contact synchronization, and any sharing or scheduling workflow—rather than relying only on a protocol label. The project maintains separate client guidance at Xandikos client documentation.
Deployment and security responsibilities
Xandikos can run directly over HTTP, behind a reverse proxy for a production deployment, or using the project’s container image. The project provides a Docker guide for the container option. A simple example instance without authentication is useful for a controlled test, but it is not a safe configuration to expose publicly.

Plan the full deployment rather than treating the server process as the whole security boundary. Decide how users authenticate, how external access is protected, and how data is backed up and restored. Because access control is listed as partial and multi-user support as experimental, carefully assess those capabilities against your requirements; a reverse proxy does not by itself establish that the DAV application’s permissions are adequate.
The repository identifies Python 3 and PyPy 3 and names dependencies including Dulwich, Jinja2, icalendar, and defusedxml. It does not establish a current minimum Python version in the cited project information, so confirm runtime requirements in the release metadata you intend to install. Xandikos project repository

Is Xandikos a fit for your setup?
- Consider it if you want a self-hosted CalDAV/CardDAV server and value Git-backed data storage and repository-oriented history.
- Check carefully first if you need mature multi-user administration, complete access controls, or a specific DAV extension that the project lists as partial or unimplemented.
- Test your clients with the actual versions and workflows you expect to use before entrusting the server with primary calendar and contact data.
- Choose another approach if you do not want to operate a server, secure its external access, and manage its data lifecycle.
Radicale is one alternative worth comparing for a lightweight DAV service. Its documentation describes filesystem storage, flexible authentication, access limits, TLS, and plugins. Compare those capabilities with Xandikos’s Git storage, required protocol features, access model, deployment stack, and your clients; the information available here does not establish a universal winner. Project status and licensing
Xandikos is GPL-3.0-or-later software. Its official repository and website are mutable, and the website may lag the repository on particular feature claims. Check the project’s current release metadata and documentation when selecting a version, especially for runtime requirements and features important to your deployment. The available project materials do not establish user counts, performance benchmarks, or resource-use figures, so those should not be assumed.
