It keeps text internally as Unicode, supports multiple fonts, and can be extended with Perl features such as tabs. It is a configurable VT102-style color terminal—not a promise of correct shaping for every language or a drop-in match for every terminal setting. The Debian trixie manual documents version 9.31; versions and build options can differ across distributions.
What is urxvt?
The command urxvt launches rxvt-unicode, an X Window System terminal emulator. Debian trixie’s rxvt-unicode(1) manual describes its documented version 9.31 as a color VT102 terminal intended as an xterm alternative for users who do not need Tektronix 4014 emulation or toolkit-style configurability. That version number describes Debian trixie’s package documentation, not every operating system or build.
The name signals its lineage: rxvt-unicode is a Unicode-focused fork of the original rxvt. Its documentation emphasizes a compact terminal with configurable resources and optional extensions, rather than a broad graphical settings interface. Whether it suits you depends on your X11 environment, desired customization, and the behavior of the programs you run inside it.
How does rxvt-unicode differ from original rxvt?
The key distinction is text handling. The manual says rxvt-unicode stores all text internally as Unicode, and adds support for multiple fonts, Xft, and internationalization features. This is useful when a terminal needs to represent text beyond a basic character set or use different fonts.

Unicode storage does not guarantee correct display for every script. The manual warns that complex cursive, vertical, or combining scripts, as well as bidirectional text, may be difficult. If your work depends on these behaviors, test the actual language, font, locale, and applications you use rather than inferring full layout support from the Unicode name.
What can urxvt do?
Customize fonts and terminal resources
Multiple-font support and Xft are part of the documented feature set. Configuration is resource-oriented, so the available options and defaults depend on the installed package and build. Consult the manual for your specific version rather than assuming every distribution exposes identical features.

Add features with Perl extensions
Some builds support embedded Perl extensions. The project FAQ documents a simple tabbed-terminal extension; for example, urxvt -pe tabbed starts urxvt with the tabbed extension. Extensions can also be disabled entirely or selected through the perl-ext-common resource. Availability and default activation vary by build, so a command or setting shown in the Debian testing urxvt(7) FAQ may not work unchanged on every package.
Reuse a process with a daemon and clients
The documentation describes a client/daemon arrangement that can reuse one process for multiple terminal windows. This is an option for users who want that process model, not evidence that urxvt is universally faster or lighter than other terminals. The documentation also notes that optional features and large scrollback buffers have costs; memory and responsiveness depend on how urxvt is built and configured.

What should you know about 256-color builds and resource use?
A documented 256-color compile option changes the default terminal name to rxvt-unicode-256color. The project documentation warns that this name is not termcap/terminfo-compatible with rxvt-unicode, so applications that expect one name may behave differently from those expecting the other. This is a build-option tradeoff, not a universal property of every urxvt package.
The same documentation warns that this option can increase memory use or slow urxvt dramatically when more than six fonts are used in one instance. Treat that as a specific documented configuration caveat, not a general performance ranking. The FAQ gives another configuration-specific illustration: a full 10,000-line scrollback buffer uses 10 megabytes under its stated six-byte-per-screen-cell configuration; with unicode3 enabled, it gives eight bytes per cell instead. Actual use depends on the settings and build.

How do you fix common compatibility problems?
Remote programs say the terminal type is unknown
Check the value of TERM in the urxvt session and whether the remote machine has matching terminfo data. For example, a remote host may not have an entry for rxvt-unicode or rxvt-unicode-256color. Install or provide the appropriate terminfo entry where possible, or configure a terminal name supported by both sides. Do not change the name blindly: the 256-color build option has a different terminal name and compatibility profile.
Text appears garbled
Check that urxvt starts with the same LC_CTYPE setting as the programs running inside it. The project rxvt-unicode FAQ and documentation identifies a mismatch as a common cause of garbled output. Also verify the font and language-specific behavior you need; correct Unicode storage alone does not settle complex shaping or bidirectional display.

An extension or option is missing
Check how your distribution built and configured urxvt. Perl support and individual extensions may be optional or disabled, and compile-time choices affect terminal naming and behavior. Compare the installed package’s documentation and configuration with the examples above before treating a missing feature as a general limitation of rxvt-unicode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider urxvt?
urxvt is worth considering if you use X11, want a VT102-style color terminal, value direct resource customization or multiple-font support, and are comfortable checking build-specific behavior. Its extensions can add features such as tabs, while daemon/client operation offers a documented process-reuse option.
It is a less certain fit if your priority is complex-script shaping, polished bidirectional text, or a terminal that behaves identically across machines without terminfo and locale attention. The reviewed documentation establishes useful capabilities and constraints, but does not provide current comparative benchmarks against other terminal emulators, so it does not support an across-the-board claim that urxvt is faster, lighter, or better.
