Trimage is a free, cross-platform utility for optimizing PNG and JPG images through either a graphical interface or the command line. Its project describes the image compression as lossless, but also says Trimage removes EXIF and other metadata—so keep originals if that embedded information matters.

What Trimage does

Trimage is designed to optimize images for websites. It supports PNG and JPG and provides both a desktop GUI and command-line options, so it can suit occasional manual work as well as file-processing workflows. The project describes it as an interface that coordinates other optimization utilities rather than a standalone image codec. Trimage’s official project page and its source repository name the tools it uses.

  • For PNG, Trimage uses OptiPNG, pngcrush, and advpng (from advancecomp).
  • For JPG, it uses jpegoptim.

The project says it applies lossless compression at the highest available compression levels. That is the project’s characterization; no independent fidelity tests, compression benchmarks, or measured file-size savings are established here.

What happens to image metadata

Trimage’s official page says it removes EXIF and other metadata. That behavior is separate from whether pixel compression is lossless: an image may retain its pixel data while embedded information is stripped. Metadata can include camera details, timestamps, or other information stored in the file.

PNG Optimizer - Compress PNG images

If you need that information later, preserve an untouched copy before optimizing. Do not assume that Trimage will retain metadata just because its compression is described as lossless.

How to submit images

The project documents three ways to provide files:

  • Choose files through the GUI’s file dialog.
  • Drag and drop files into the GUI.
  • Use command-line options to specify a single file or a directory.

The documented command-line options include:

  • --file=FILENAME to specify a file.
  • --directory=DIRECTORY to specify a directory.
  • --help to display help.
  • --version to display the version.
  • --verbose and --quiet to control output.

Consult the help output for the installed version before building a script around these options; command behavior and availability can depend on the release and packaging.

Installation options and dependencies

The project documents package-manager routes for Debian and Ubuntu, the Arch User Repository (AUR), and Homebrew on macOS, plus source installation for other Unix-like systems. These are documented routes, not a guarantee that a package is available or installs unchanged on every current operating-system version.

OptiPic Pro: Image Compressor & JPG PNG WEBP Optimizer
  • Fast local image compression for JPG, PNG, and WEBP
  • Clean interface with no annoying ads

Listed requirements include Python 3, PyQt5, OptiPNG, pngcrush, advancecomp, and jpegoptim. Debian’s Bookworm package record also describes Trimage as a Python/Qt utility and lists dependencies including Python 3, PyQt5, advancecomp, jpegoptim, OptiPNG, and pngcrush. Check the instructions for your platform and package source before installing; operating-system repositories and package-manager availability can change. Debian’s Bookworm package record documents that distribution’s package details.

Is Trimage a good fit?

Trimage is a candidate if you need a GUI or command-line workflow for PNG and JPG optimization and are comfortable with its external-tool dependencies. Consider another workflow if you need formats beyond PNG and JPG, must preserve embedded metadata, or require independently measured compression results. The available project descriptions establish no comparative benchmark or tested recommendation against alternative optimizers.

The official site search result identifies version 1.0.6, but the sources cited here do not establish a dated latest release or a reliable maintenance cadence. Check the project repository and the package source for current release and availability information before relying on a particular installation route.
