Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSome people are choosing simpler phones and other limited-purpose devices to reduce digital distraction and regain control over how they spend their attention. That is a meaningful preference, not evidence of a mass switch away from smartphones: simpler devices can also make work, services and everyday communication harder to manage.
Why are some people choosing simpler gadgets?
“Simpler gadgets” can mean a traditional feature phone with basic calling and texting, a deliberately limited handset, or an analogue device used instead of a phone feature. The common thread is narrower capability: fewer apps, feeds or notifications competing for attention.
A 2024 qualitative study by Annabel Rothschild and Janne Lindqvist examined traditional and designer dumbphone users and developers. The researchers interviewed eight traditional dumbphone users, five designer dumbphone users and two developers. Participants described several motivations, including reducing distraction, supporting mental or physical health, religious devotion and political disaffiliation. Those interviews explain why some people make the choice; their small sample cannot show how common any one motivation is among consumers. Read the study summary from Aalto University.
Control over attention
A device with fewer apps can make it harder to fall into a feed or spend time switching between alerts. For someone who wants fewer digital temptations, the appeal may be the limits themselves—not a belief that older technology is better in every way.

Health, faith and values
The interview study also found that participants’ decisions could reflect mental or physical health, religious devotion, or a desire to distance themselves from technology-related politics. These are distinct reasons, not a single trend with one explanation.
Is simpler technology becoming a mass-market replacement for smartphones?
The available figures do not establish that most people are switching to simpler devices. Asurion reported in 2024 that 5% of surveyed US consumers planned to replace or upgrade their smartphone in the next 12 months. That finding describes upgrade plans, not demand for feature phones: people who were not planning an upgrade may simply have been satisfied with their current device. Asurion also reported that 66% of surveyed US consumers did not consider themselves tech savvy, but that self-description does not show a preference for less capable gadgets. See Asurion’s 2024 report summary.

Interest in cutting screen time can lead to choices other than changing phones. MIDiA Research says two-thirds of consumers tried to reduce screen time in Q1 2024; it reports that 21% turned to physical formats and 23% to in-person activities. The summary page does not show the sampling details behind these figures, so they should be read as MIDiA’s reported results, not as a precise measure of a universal shift. Why do smartphones remain hard to replace?
A smartphone combines functions that used to require separate tools with access to apps and services many people now rely on. In a representative German survey, 74% of smartphone users said their phone had fully or mostly replaced their alarm clock; 65% said the same of a camera, and 56% of a video camera. Bitkom Research interviewed 1,004 people aged 16 and older in Germany during weeks 2–5 of 2025. The figures show how useful smartphones are as all-purpose tools; they do not measure whether users want more or fewer features. See Bitkom’s 2025 survey findings.

- Rugged Enough for Everyday Challenges: Built to handle harsh environments, the M9 features IP68 and IP69K protection against water and dust, and can withstand drops of up to 1.8 meters. Whether on rugged job sites or during rainy commutes, it provides reliable durability where ordinary phones fall short.
- Loud & Clear for Everyday Use: Designed for users who value clarity and simplicity, the M9 features loud and crisp call volume, large easy-to-read fonts, and generously sized buttons that feel comfortable and confident to press. AGM M9 keeps focus on what matters: calling and texting with reliable T9 input when needed.
The trade-off is also about access, not just convenience. The Aalto-hosted study notes that government systems, business services and personal relationships often depend on smartphone capabilities. A phone that omits a required banking, work, transit, mapping or authentication app may create a daily obstacle. Choosing to disconnect can be complicated when those systems assume a smartphone—and not everyone has the same ability to opt out.
How to decide whether a simpler device fits your routine
Before switching, check the things you need the device to do, as well as the distractions you want it to prevent. A limited handset may work well as a primary phone for one person and be impractical for another.

- Distraction control: Identify the apps, alerts and feeds you want to limit. Check whether a feature phone removes access to them or whether a smartphone setting or app restriction would be enough.
- Essential access: List the services you use for work, banking, government tasks, transit, maps and authentication. Confirm that each one has a usable alternative on the device you are considering.
- Communication compatibility: Check whether family, colleagues or organizations expect you to use a particular messaging app, group chat or video-calling service.
- Practical overhead: Consider whether removing phone features would mean carrying a separate camera, music player, alarm clock or navigation tool. Extra devices may add friction even when each serves a narrower purpose.
- Market fit: Network bands, carrier support and availability vary by model and country. Verify compatibility with your carrier before buying a specific handset.
A second, simpler phone can be a middle ground for people who want fewer distractions in some settings while keeping a smartphone for tasks that require one. It is not automatically less complicated: carrying and maintaining two devices adds its own overhead.

Privacy and control are part of the wider context, but the available survey evidence does not show that privacy concerns cause people to choose simpler devices. In Deloitte’s Q2 2024 survey of 3,857 US consumers, 79% said technology providers’ privacy and security policies were not very clear, and 79% said it was not very easy to control data collected by providers. Those responses point to reported concerns about transparency and control; they do not connect those concerns to dumbphone purchases. Read Deloitte’s 2024 Connected Consumer findings.

What counts as a simpler gadget?
There is no single definition. A traditional feature phone offers a narrower set of functions than a smartphone, while a designer phone may deliberately prioritize limited use. Toaster’s 2025 trends report names the Nokia 2780, Light Phone and Punkt as examples discussed in the context of minimal phones and finite-purpose experiences. Those examples illustrate the category; the report does not establish sales growth or prove that any particular model suits every user. See Toaster’s 2025 trends report.
