ProtonVPN Plus is Test-Aankoop’s 2026 best-in-test pick among eight paid VPN services. That does not make it the right choice for everyone: the Belgian consumer organization also highlights different services for streaming, privacy and budget priorities. Choose by what you need, and treat streaming compatibility and speed claims as conditional rather than guaranteed.
Which VPN is best for Belgium in 2026?
For an overall starting point, Test-Aankoop named ProtonVPN Plus best in test in its 2026 comparison. It assessed eight paid services on criteria including speed, features, usability, privacy and security. The page gives ProtonVPN Plus different overall scores in separate sections—88/100 in one and 90/100 in another—so the award is clearer to report than a single exact score.
The other recommendations depend on your priority. Test-Aankoop names Surfshark One, Windscribe Pro, ExpressVPN Advanced and NordVPN Plus among its stronger streaming choices; Windscribe Pro, Private Internet Access and ProtonVPN Plus for privacy; and Private Internet Access as its budget option. It cautions that introductory prices can rise, so compare the total annual cost rather than choosing by the opening offer alone. See Test-Aankoop’s 2026 VPN comparison.
| Priority | Test-Aankoop recommendation | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Overall result | ProtonVPN Plus, named best in test | The page lists conflicting overall scores; use the award, not a single score. |
| Streaming | Surfshark One, Windscribe Pro, ExpressVPN Advanced or NordVPN Plus | Results vary by platform and whether you connect from Belgium or abroad. |
| Privacy | Windscribe Pro, Private Internet Access or ProtonVPN Plus | A test finding or provider claim is not a guarantee of anonymity. |
| Budget | Private Internet Access | Compare renewal pricing and total contract cost with the introductory rate. |
For context, Test-Aankoop reports scores of 86/100 for Windscribe Pro, 85/100 for Surfshark One and 73/100 for Private Internet Access in its ranking section. Those figures belong to that organization’s 2026 test, not to a universal rating system.

Does the VPN have Belgian servers and give you a Belgian IP?
A Belgian server can provide a Belgian IP address while you are elsewhere, which may help with services that expect a local connection. Proton’s official Belgium page says Proton VPN offers 11 servers in Belgium and Belgian IP access. It also lists apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, Android, iPhone and Android TV, along with a kill switch, Secure Core and a 30-day money-back guarantee. These are Proton’s own product statements, not an independent comparison of server inventories across providers. Check Proton VPN’s Belgium server details.
The available comparison does not establish a complete, comparable current Belgian server inventory for every provider tested. If a Belgian IP is essential, confirm the provider’s current server locations and supported device before subscribing.

Which VPN is most likely to work with Belgian TV and streaming?
Test-Aankoop’s named streaming leaders are Surfshark One, Windscribe Pro, ExpressVPN Advanced and NordVPN Plus. That is evidence from its 2026 comparison, not a promise that a given platform, title or account will work in every situation. Streaming services change their VPN detection and access rules, and results can differ depending on whether you are connecting from Belgium to a foreign service or trying to reach Belgian television while abroad.
One specific limitation in Test-Aankoop’s results: Proton VPN could not access VRT MAX when connecting from abroad, although some foreign services worked when connecting from Belgium. Do not treat success in one direction as proof of access in the other.

Speed: useful comparison, not a Belgian home-speed forecast
A 2026 performance report by Artifact Security, summarized in an article hosted by NordVPN, compared NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, ProtonVPN and Surfshark. It describes one round of testing under AMTSO VPN Testing Guidelines, covering throughput, stability, latency and connection time across 55 routes. Those routes began in Frankfurt, London, Singapore, New York and San Francisco; Belgium was not an origin. The results can provide comparative context, but they do not predict the speed you will get from a Belgian ISP, device or route. Read NordVPN’s summary of the Artifact Security test.
| Provider | Artifact Security overall score, as reported by NordVPN (2026) |
|---|---|
| NordVPN | 91 |
| ExpressVPN | 84 |
| ProtonVPN | 83 |
| Surfshark | 81 |
| Mullvad | 70 |
In that report, NordVPN recorded an average Windows download speed of 271.9 Mbps and a median of 568.4 Mbps; the report describes the median as more representative than a best-case peak. Its median Android download speed was 526.6 Mbps, with Android testing conducted from London. These are test results under the report’s conditions, not expected Belgian household speeds.

Privacy: distinguish test results from provider promises
Test-Aankoop recommends Windscribe Pro, Private Internet Access and ProtonVPN Plus for readers prioritizing privacy. It reports that its Windscribe Pro test found no third-party data sharing. Proton, by contrast, describes its own no-logs policy, open-source apps and recurring independent audits on its website. Those statements should be understood as provider claims, not as proof that any VPN makes a user anonymous or replaces account security practices. Proton’s Belgium page and privacy statements.

The available comparison supports a pricing caution, not a current offer table: promotions may be temporary, and the longer-term annual cost matters. Before checkout, verify the price in the currency charged, VAT, subscription duration, introductory period, renewal amount and refund terms. A low first-term price alone does not establish which plan is cheapest over time.

Do you need a VPN router?
No. A VPN app is sufficient for a person protecting traffic on supported devices; a router is an optional whole-home setup. TechRadar identifies ExpressVPN Aircove as a VPN router with groups that can use different locations. Confirm current availability and device compatibility before considering one. See TechRadar’s ExpressVPN Aircove review.
