To empty voicemail on a Samsung Galaxy, either call your carrier’s voicemail by touching and holding 1 in the Phone app and follow its delete prompts, or delete messages in your carrier’s Visual Voicemail app. The right method depends on which voicemail service your carrier has set up; there is no universal delete key or app interface.
Choose where your voicemail is managed
| Method | Where to delete messages | How deletion works | Availability and recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dial-in voicemail | Your carrier’s voicemail mailbox, reached from the Phone app | Listen to the carrier’s spoken menu and choose its delete option. The key varies by provider, as Samsung Australia’s guide explains. | Voicemail options depend on the carrier. Samsung’s dial-in instructions are for Australian variant Galaxy devices; check your local carrier or Samsung support if the steps differ. |
| Visual Voicemail | Your carrier’s Voicemail or Visual Voicemail app | Select a message and use the app’s Delete button or trash icon; some apps ask you to confirm. | The app and its controls vary by carrier. Verizon says deleted messages in its Visual Voicemail service cannot be retrieved; check your carrier’s archive and recovery behavior before deleting important messages. |
Samsung notes that voicemail access and the name or icon of a Visual Voicemail app can vary by carrier. See Samsung’s Galaxy call-settings guidance.
Delete messages by calling voicemail
- Open the Phone app.
- Touch and hold 1 to call voicemail.
- Listen to the complete menu and choose the option the carrier announces for deleting a message. Do not assume a particular number will work: the provider sets the prompts and menu keys.
- Repeat for each message you want to remove, then end the call.
Samsung Australia’s instructions describe this dial-in route and note that menu options differ by network provider. Availability and options may also vary by provider.
Delete messages in Visual Voicemail
- Open your carrier’s Voicemail or Visual Voicemail app.
- Select a message or touch and hold it to reveal its actions.
- Tap Delete or the trash icon, then confirm if prompted.
The exact controls depend on the carrier. For example, AT&T’s Galaxy A16 5G instructions say to touch and hold a message, tap Delete, and confirm. Verizon’s Visual Voicemail instructions use a Trash icon and allow users to select multiple messages before deleting them.

If the voicemail notification remains
A notification is separate from the messages in the carrier mailbox. Samsung UK recommends listening to all new messages first; the notification usually clears after they have been heard. If it remains, Samsung’s notification troubleshooting guide advises clearing the cache and data for Call settings, and then trying the Phone app if needed. Clearing Phone app data resets it and removes recent calls, though Samsung says it does not remove contacts. This troubleshooting does not empty the carrier mailbox. If the icon still persists, contact your network provider about the voicemail account.
Check archive and recovery before deleting
For Verizon Visual Voicemail, deleted messages cannot be retrieved, while archived messages are saved to the device’s internal storage, according to Verizon’s guidance. That recovery information is specific to Verizon’s service; for another carrier, check its app’s archive and recovery behavior before removing messages you may need.
