What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Open Start, search for Windows Security, and open the app. Its protection-area cards show whether Windows reports an issue or recommends an action. Open the relevant card to inspect the details; a green status is not proof that a device is free of every threat.
Read the Windows Security status icons
Scan the protection-area cards on the app’s home page. Microsoft describes the icons this way in its Windows Security App Overview:
- Green: the device is sufficiently protected and there are no recommended actions.
- Yellow: there is a safety recommendation to review.
- Red: something needs immediate attention.
These colors summarize the app’s reported status. Open a yellow or red card and read the specific message: a recommendation does not necessarily mean malware has been found.
Check antivirus protection and its provider
- In Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection.
- Review the current-threat information, last scan details, and protection settings. This page also provides scan options, as described in Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance.
- To see which antivirus is registered, select Who’s protecting me?, then Manage providers. You can also open Settings > Manage providers for the provider summary.
Microsoft Defender Antivirus may be off because a compatible third-party antivirus is active. Check the provider listing before treating Defender’s off state as a sign that no antivirus is registered. If real-time protection is off, files you open or download are not scanned for threats while it remains off; see Microsoft’s Virus & threat protection guidance.

Check firewall status for the network you are using
Open Firewall & network protection. Windows shows firewall information for domain, private, and public network profiles. Check the profile corresponding to the network currently in use and review its Microsoft Defender Firewall status; the state can differ across profiles. Microsoft explains the profiles and settings in its Firewall & network protection guidance.
On an organization-managed computer, policy may control or lock firewall settings. If a setting cannot be changed, contact your IT administrator rather than trying to work around the policy.

Use Protection history to understand recent changes
Open Protection history to review recent actions, detected items, and services that were turned off. Microsoft says Protection History retains entries for two weeks. Administrator privileges are required to view details for threats. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.

- Open the card with the warning and follow its specific recommendation; do not assume a yellow icon means an active infection.
- For antivirus, compare the state shown on Virus & threat protection with the provider listed under Manage providers.
- For firewall, verify the profile for the network in use rather than relying on another profile’s status.
