Before buying a Fitbit, confirm your phone can run Google’s current Google Health app, make sure you can use a Google Account, check whether the features you want require a paid plan, and compare the model’s battery estimate with how you plan to use it. These checks matter because the app and account setup changed in 2026, Premium features vary by country and device, and battery estimates can fall sharply with settings such as always-on display and GPS.
Check that your phone can run Google Health
Google’s current setup requirements call for Android 11 or higher or iOS 16.4 or higher. Meeting the operating-system minimum is not a guarantee that every handset will work: Google warns that the Huawei P8 Lite, Huawei P9 Lite, Xiaomi Mi 6, and Huawei P20 Lite may have compatibility issues even if they meet the listed requirements. See Google’s Google Health app requirements.
- Check the operating-system version on the exact phone you plan to pair.
- Search for Google Health in that phone’s app store and verify that it can be installed before you buy.
- If you use one of the handset models Google flags, do not rely on the OS version alone; confirm compatibility for your specific phone.
Fitbit trackers and watches sync with phones and tablets over Bluetooth Low Energy. Google says data syncs automatically through the day when the device is nearby and the Google Health app is opened. Its Charge 6 setup instructions direct buyers to install Google Health, sign in with a Google Account, and connect the device.
Prepare for the Google Health app and a Google Account
Google says the Fitbit app became the Google Health app on May 19, 2026. People using a Fitbit account need to move their account to a Google Account to access Google Health. If you are following older setup guides that refer to the Fitbit app or Fitbit-account login, check Google’s current instructions instead. Details are in Google’s setup requirements and its app and account transition information.

Decide whether Google Health Premium matters to you
Google renamed Fitbit Premium to Google Health Premium on May 19, 2026. Some coaching and other features require Premium, but that does not mean a subscription is required for all Fitbit tracking. Features and availability vary by country and device, and Google says they may change. Google’s Google Health Premium information also lists requirements for particular services: Google Health Coach and premium coaching are for users aged 18 or older who have a Fitbit or Pixel Watch, and are available only in specified countries. Some Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers receive Google Health Premium at no additional charge, subject to a Fitbit device or Pixel Watch requirement.
- Write down the specific feature you want, such as a coaching service.
- Check that feature’s eligibility, device requirements, and availability in your country in the Google Health app or local offer.
- Review the offer’s price, trial terms, and renewal details before signing up. There is no single global price established here, so use the current terms shown for your location.
Compare battery estimates with your planned use
Battery life is model-specific, and Google’s figures are manufacturer estimates rather than independent comparative test results. For example, Google lists the Fitbit Charge 6 at up to 7 days, but says that estimate falls to up to 3 days with always-on display enabled. Continuous built-in GPS use is listed at up to 5 hours. Google cautions that actual results vary with settings, usage, environment, and other factors. See its battery guidance.

| Model | Google’s stated battery estimate |
|---|---|
| Fitbit Charge 6 | Up to 7 days; up to 3 days with always-on display; up to 5 hours of continuous built-in GPS use |
| Fitbit Inspire 3 | Up to 10 days |
| Fitbit Versa 4 | 6+ days |
| Fitbit Luxe | Up to 5 days |
| Fitbit One | Up to 2 weeks |
These estimates are not a direct real-world ranking: they cover different models and generations and reflect Google’s stated guidance, not a shared independent test. Think about the features you expect to keep on. Google notes that more notifications, GPS use, a brighter screen, always-on display, and SpO2 tracking can increase charging frequency. Reducing notifications and GPS use, dimming the screen, or turning off always-on display can help extend battery life.
Check the charging routine before you choose
Google recommends charging with the cable supplied with the device. Its guidance says a full charge can take up to 2 hours; charging time can be affected by use and other factors. Avoid charging below 32°F (0°C) or above 113°F (45°C). Google also notes that a device may need charging more often after several hundred charge cycles. See Google’s charging and battery guidance.

Confirm local availability
Google says it no longer sells Fitbit products directly in select EU and APAC countries, while continuing to sell through select retail partners and support devices already owned. Availability can therefore depend on your market. Check current local retailers and Google’s regional notice rather than assuming you can buy directly from Google in every country.
