Put a REST API and application backend between enterprise applications and the blockchain. The backend authenticates callers, checks business rules, translates requests into smart-contract reads or transactions through an Ethereum node’s JSON-RPC interface, and returns application-friendly responses. Keep node RPC access on controlled network paths, authorize each operation, and manage signing keys separately from the blockchain client.

How a REST API connects to a smart contract

A REST API does not usually call a smart contract directly. It sends requests to an application backend, which communicates with an Ethereum node. Ethereum clients implement a common JSON-RPC interface; backend libraries can wrap those requests, but they do not remove the need for a node.

  1. Receive a business request. An enterprise application calls a REST resource exposed by the backend, such as an endpoint for checking a record or requesting a state change.
  2. Authenticate and validate. The backend identifies the caller, checks authorization for the requested operation, validates inputs, and applies business rules before contacting the chain.
  3. Handle reads. For a read, the backend queries the contract through the node’s JSON-RPC interface, then maps the result to the REST response model. The API should make clear what the returned data represents and whether it reflects the latest available chain state.
  4. Submit state changes. For a write, the backend prepares a transaction, obtains a signature through the organization’s chosen key-management arrangement, and submits the signed transaction to the node. It should return a transaction identifier and report lifecycle status rather than treating submission as immediate completion or finality.
  5. Operate the workflow. Add monitoring, retry rules, idempotency protections, and reconciliation for cases where a request times out, a transaction is delayed, or the application’s view needs to be checked against chain state.

The first four steps follow the application-to-node interaction documented for Ethereum and Besu. Monitoring and transaction-lifecycle handling are application design responsibilities, not features guaranteed by a REST gateway or blockchain client.

Choose the network and node interface

The right network depends on who needs to participate, who governs membership, and what the application must expose. Besu is one Ethereum execution client option for public or private networks. Its documented interfaces include JSON-RPC over HTTP, WebSocket, and IPC, as well as Pub/Sub and GraphQL.

Interface Documented Besu default Potential role in an enterprise design
HTTP JSON-RPC Port 8545 Backend requests to read contract state or submit transactions.
WebSocket Port 8546 Persistent connections and subscription-oriented workflows.
GraphQL Port 8547 An alternative query interface where its available data and behavior fit the application.
IPC Not stated in the cited Besu API documentation Local inter-process communication where the deployment and client support it.

These ports are documented defaults, not a guarantee that a deployment uses them. Confirm the live configuration before opening network rules or writing operational procedures. Besu’s API reference was identified as updated September 1, 2026.

Public network

A public-network design uses the chosen public chain and depends on the selected execution client and node provider for access and operations. Evaluate availability, network behavior, and the application’s tolerance for delayed or changing transaction status as part of the design. The available documentation does not establish that a public network is suitable for every enterprise workflow.

Permissioned network

Besu documents private networks as separate from Ethereum Mainnet and testnets. Such networks typically use a distinct chain ID and can use QBFT or IBFT 2.0 consensus, with permissioning and plugins available as network features. These technical controls do not settle organizational governance, privacy, legal obligations, or interoperability between participants; those need agreement among the organizations involved.

Secure the RPC layer and the REST API

Treat a node’s RPC interface as infrastructure access, not as a public-facing application API. A REST backend lets the organization expose narrowly defined business operations without giving every client direct access to node methods.

  • Restrict network reachability. Besu documents 127.0.0.1 as its default host. Binding to 0.0.0.0 permits remote connections; the documentation warns that production deployments need firewall protection. Prefer private network paths between the backend and node where practical.
  • Authenticate RPC clients. Besu documents username/password and JWT public-key authentication options.
  • Authorize methods narrowly. Besu supports permissions at API-group or individual-method granularity. Grant the backend only the methods it needs, and do not expose administrative namespaces to public clients.
  • Use encrypted transport. Besu does not itself provide HTTPS. Its documentation recommends putting authenticated traffic behind SSL/TLS termination supplied by a network layer.
  • Do not confuse host allowlisting with access control. Besu’s host allowlist checks request host headers to guard against DNS rebinding. The documentation explicitly says this is not permissioning; use authentication and authorization to restrict access.
  • Protect the REST boundary too. Authenticate API callers, authorize each business operation, validate inputs, and avoid returning credentials, signing material, or unnecessary node-level details in responses.

Separate transaction signing from node access

RPC authentication controls who can call the node; it does not provide custody for the keys that authorize transactions. Besu does not manage accounts or private keys internally. Its documentation says to keep private keys secret, ideally in hardware or a vault.

Besu documents signed transaction submission with eth_sendRawTransaction and does not implement eth_sendTransaction. In an enterprise design, keep key custody and signing responsibilities explicit: decide which component prepares and signs transactions, which component can submit signed transactions, and how access to signing credentials is controlled. Do not let logs, traces, error messages, or REST responses disclose secrets.

Hardware security modules and other hardware-backed custody are categories worth assessing for transaction signing, but suitability depends on the organization’s requirements and security review. The cited documentation does not specify or certify a particular device.
