Neither phone is the automatic value winner: their US starting list prices are nearly identical, so the better buy depends on the features and ecosystem you will actually use. Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max for iOS, variable-aperture camera control, a 2TB storage option, or its longer result in Tom’s Guide’s battery test. Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra for Android, an S Pen, built-in Privacy Display, and dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras.
Price and availability: nearly a tie at the entry level
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026; preorders began September 12 and availability began September 18, according to Apple’s launch announcement. The US list price starts at $1,299 for 256GB. Samsung’s US list prices start at $1,299.99 for the Galaxy S26 Ultra with 256GB. Those figures, reported by TechRadar’s comparison, make the starting-price difference just 99 cents before tax.

What differs on the display and in the hand?
Both are large 6.9-inch, 120Hz OLED-family displays. TechRadar reports a 3,000-nit peak-brightness figure for the iPhone, while Samsung lists the Galaxy’s resolution as 3120 × 1440 and highlights its built-in Privacy Display. These specifications do not establish that one screen will look better in every setting: brightness figures and viewing conditions matter, while resolution and privacy are distinct features.

Privacy Display is a practical Galaxy advantage if you often use your phone where people can glance over your shoulder. Samsung’s specification page for its Canadian model confirms the feature; check the exact regional model’s listing for local specifications. The cited Samsung US page also lists Privacy Display.
Camera choice: control and low light or more telephoto options?
iPhone: variable aperture and tested low-light strengths
Apple’s launch announcement identifies a variable-aperture main camera. That gives the iPhone a camera-control distinction, while TechRadar’s comparison describes three rear 48MP cameras. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison found cleaner low-light output and natural color from the iPhone in its testing. Those are that publication’s findings in its comparison, not a guarantee for every scene or photographer.

Galaxy: dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras
Samsung’s specifications list a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide, 50MP 5x telephoto, and 10MP 3x telephoto. Having both dedicated telephoto options offers more flexibility for framing at different distances. Tom’s Guide found that the Galaxy’s longer telephoto reach captured distant subjects with greater clarity at high zoom in its comparison.
Megapixel counts alone do not settle image quality. If you mostly photograph people, pets, food, or everyday scenes, the tested low-light and color differences may matter more than zoom reach. If you regularly shoot distant subjects, the Galaxy’s dedicated 5x camera is a more direct fit.

Battery and performance: what the cited tests actually show
Battery rundown
In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 battery rundown, the iPhone 18 Pro Max lasted 18 hours 27 minutes and the Galaxy S26 Ultra lasted 16 hours 40 minutes. These are results from that publication’s particular test, not predicted daily runtimes; screen settings, signal strength, apps, and use can change endurance. Samsung separately claims up to 31 hours of video playback under its stated conditions on its US product page. That manufacturer claim is not directly interchangeable with Tom’s Guide’s rundown.
