You can add a right-click Extract option for CAB files by merging a registry file, or remove it by deleting the registry key it creates. The community-published recipe below offers two behaviors: extract into a folder named after the CAB file, either leaving that folder closed or opening it in File Explorer. You need to be signed in as an administrator to follow the tutorial’s merge steps. This menu change is optional; Windows also has command-line extraction tools.
What the custom Extract option does
A CAB file does not have an Extract context-menu item by default, according to the ElevenForum tutorial. Its registry recipe adds a command under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellExtractCommand. The command creates a folder beside the CAB file, names it after the file, and extracts the CAB contents into it.
The recipe is a community-provided customization, not a Microsoft-endorsed menu change. Microsoft documents CAB extraction separately, including Windows 11 applicability, through extract / extrac32. CAB files are cabinet archives used, among other purposes, with installer packages and multi-cabinet sets, as described in Microsoft’s Cabinet Files documentation.
Choose whether to open the output folder
| Menu choice | After extraction |
|---|---|
| Extract | Creates the same-named folder beside the CAB file and leaves it unopened. |
| Extract and open | Creates the same-named folder, extracts the contents, then opens that folder in File Explorer. |
Both variants use the command shown by ElevenForum. Review the contents before merging a registry file; as a precaution, you can also back up the relevant registry state first.

Add the Extract menu item
- Sign in to Windows 11 as an administrator.
- Open Notepad and copy one of the registry files below. Use the plain variant if you do not want Explorer to open after extraction.
- Save the file with a
.regextension. In File Explorer, make sure it was not saved with an additional.txtextension. - If Smart App Control requires it, unblock the file. Then double-click it, review the prompts, and approve merging the registry changes.
- Right-click a CAB file and look for the new Extract entry. Its position can vary; Windows 11 may place less-used shell commands under Show more options.
Variant 1: Extract and leave the folder closed
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellExtractCommand]
@="cmd /c for %%I in ("%1") do (mkdir "%%~dpnI" & expand "%1" -F:* "%%~dpnI")"
Variant 2: Extract and open the folder
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellExtractCommand]
@="cmd /c for %%I in ("%1") do (mkdir "%%~dpnI" 2>nul & expand "%1" -F:* "%%~dpnI" & explorer "%%~dpnI")"
These are the command values published by the ElevenForum tutorial; they are not independently verified here. The exact menu placement is not guaranteed across Windows 11 builds. Microsoft’s explanation of Windows 11 context menus says Show more options loads the Windows 10 context menu for less-used shell verbs and apps still porting over, but it does not test this CAB-specific recipe: Extending the Context Menu and Share Dialog in Windows 11.
Remove the custom Extract item
The removal file deletes the CABFolderShellExtract key created by the add recipe. Save the following as a .reg file, then merge it using the same administrator sign-in and prompt-approval process described above.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellExtract]
This removes the custom entry; it does not remove Windows’ ability to extract CAB files through other methods.
Extract a CAB without changing the context menu
If you would rather not edit the registry, use Windows’ documented extract/Extrac32 command-line tools. Microsoft lists Windows 11 as an applicable operating system and documents options to list a cabinet’s contents, extract all files or selected files, choose an output directory, and control overwrite prompts. On Windows 10 and newer, Microsoft says Extract.exe is not provided or supported and is replaced by Extrac32.exe; see the command reference for syntax and options.

The context-menu recipe instead uses expand ... -F:*. Microsoft’s cited command reference documents extract/Extrac32, not that specific registry command, so treat the menu recipe as its own community-published method rather than a Microsoft-verified implementation.
Windows 11 version scope
The community tutorial labels its steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11, but does not provide a tested Windows 11 build matrix. Microsoft’s command reference lists Windows 11 without specifying an edition restriction for the cited applicability. Separately, Microsoft’s Zip and unzip files page discusses ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR support for Windows 11 version 24H2; that page does not establish a change to CAB context-menu customization.
