What are the perks of switching to a Microsoft Surface Laptop? The current Surface Laptop family gives you a choice of touchscreen sizes, configurable hardware, USB-C connectivity, and Copilot+ PC features on eligible configurations. Microsoft also advertises model-specific battery-life estimates, but they are test results—not a promise of how long your laptop will last in everyday use.
These benefits depend on the exact generation and configuration. Microsoft currently lists 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch Surface Laptop models; compare the particular model you are considering with your current laptop before deciding to switch.
1. Choose a screen size that fits your work
The current Surface Laptop family includes 13-inch, 13.8-inch, and 15-inch touchscreen models. A smaller display may suit someone prioritizing a more compact laptop, while a larger one provides more screen area. The right choice depends on how you work and travel; size alone does not establish which model is best for you.
Display specifications also differ. Microsoft’s Store comparison lists refresh rates of up to 60 Hz for the 13-inch model and up to 120 Hz for the 13.8-inch and 15-inch options. 2. Match processor, memory, and storage to your workload
Processor, memory, and storage choices vary by size and configuration. That gives you room to select a setup around your actual work, but switching to Surface is not by itself evidence of a performance improvement. Consider the applications you run, how many tasks you keep open, and how much local storage you need; then compare the exact Surface configuration with your current laptop’s specifications.

Before choosing, check the processor, memory, storage, weight, and price for the specific SKU—not just the family name. Microsoft’s current lineup is identified as Surface Laptop 8th Edition, while its Store comparison uses the Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC label. Older generations differ: for example, Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 5 specifications describe an earlier model, not the current lineup.
3. Get Copilot+ PC features on eligible configurations
Microsoft promotes Copilot+ PC experiences for qualifying Surface Laptop configurations. Eligibility and feature availability depend on the configuration and applicable requirements, so do not assume that every Surface Laptop—or every configuration within a generation—includes every advertised AI feature.

4. Check whether the ports fit your accessories
USB-C is listed across the current family, but the available ports are not identical across models. USB4, USB-A, Surface Connect, a headphone jack, and a card reader vary by model or configuration. A Surface Laptop may reduce the need for adapters if its ports match the accessories you already use; the family name alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Make a short inventory of your essentials—such as a monitor, external drive, headset, or charger—and compare each connection with the port list for the exact laptop. Also verify charging and accessory requirements for your devices before relying on a USB-C port or dock.

Microsoft says battery life varies significantly with device configuration, usage, network and feature configuration, signal strength, settings, and other factors. Video playback and active web use are different test categories, so use the estimate that best resembles your planned use—and allow for your own workload to produce different results.
