For most everyday diagrams, draw.io (diagrams.net) is the strongest place to start: it is free, open source, and supports browser and desktop workflows. Choose LibreOffice Draw for desktop drawing in an open-source office suite, Mermaid when diagrams should live as text beside documentation, yEd for data-driven graphs and automatic layouts, or Excalidraw for informal whiteboarding. These tools are not interchangeable, and free of charge does not always mean open source.

Which free Visio alternative should you choose?

Tool Best fit Authoring approach Free or open source?
draw.io (diagrams.net) Flowcharts and general-purpose diagrams Browser or desktop visual editor Free; source code is Apache 2.0 licensed, according to the product site.
LibreOffice Draw Desktop drawing within an office suite Installed visual editor Part of the open-source LibreOffice suite.
Mermaid Diagrams maintained with documentation or project files Text-based diagram definitions Open source.
yEd Graph Editor Graphs built from imported data and automatically arranged layouts Desktop visual editor with data import Free of charge under its software license agreement; the publisher page reviewed does not identify it as open source.
Excalidraw Sketches and whiteboard-like communication Virtual whiteboard The public repository describes the project; check its license and deployment terms for your intended use.

Microsoft Visio spans basic diagrams and specialist work, including UML, advanced network diagrams, BPMN, engineering drawings, and data-linked diagrams. The availability of those capabilities depends on Visio product tier, so a free alternative should be judged against the diagram types and features you actually use—not just the word “diagram.”

Best alternatives by workflow

draw.io (diagrams.net): broad everyday diagrams

draw.io is a practical first choice for conventional flowcharts and general-purpose visual editing. Its official site describes it as free, requiring no sign-up, and identifies its source code as Apache 2.0 licensed. It offers web and desktop access, local-storage options, collaboration and integrations, with SVG, PNG and PDF export. Those general strengths do not establish parity with specialized Visio stencils or guarantee that a particular Visio file will import cleanly.

LibreOffice Draw: desktop drawing in an office suite

Draw is LibreOffice’s drawing application. The Document Foundation describes LibreOffice as a free, open-source office suite and presents Draw as suitable for simple diagrams through complex illustrations. It fits people who prefer installed desktop software in a broader office suite. The product page does not establish detailed current Visio compatibility, so do not assume complex Visio documents will transfer intact.

Mermaid: diagrams as text

Mermaid turns text definitions into diagrams and provides a live editor. This makes it useful when diagrams belong alongside source-controlled documentation and need to be reviewed or changed as text. It is a different workflow from dragging shapes around a canvas; choose it when maintainable text is an advantage, not when you need a conventional visual editor. The project homepage displayed version 12.1.0 when reviewed; versions can change.

yEd Graph Editor: imported data and automatic layouts

yEd is a free desktop editor for Windows, Unix/Linux and macOS, according to its publisher. It can import spreadsheet and XML data, automatically arrange graph elements, and export PNG, JPG, SVG, PDF and SWF. The publisher’s page displayed version 3.25.1 when reviewed. Its publisher describes use as free of charge under a software license agreement, but the reviewed page does not call it open source.

Excalidraw: informal whiteboarding

Excalidraw is described in its public repository as a virtual whiteboard for sketching hand-drawn-style diagrams. It suits informal sketches and visual communication where a polished stencil-driven diagram is not the goal. The repository description alone does not establish full Visio feature parity or the licensing and deployment terms for every use case.

Can these alternatives open and preserve Visio files?

Do not treat a supported file extension as proof that the contents will remain editable. Microsoft says Visio in Microsoft 365 supports .vsdx but not legacy .vsd files. Microsoft also notes that some diagram types unavailable in the lightweight web app may not be editable there even when the format itself is supported. This is a useful warning about format compatibility generally; it is not certification of any third-party tool’s import or export fidelity.

How to test a Visio migration safely

  1. Choose representative files. Include ordinary diagrams as well as examples that use the specialist shapes, layers or page setups your work depends on.
  2. Make copies before importing. Keep the originals untouched so a conversion or editing test cannot replace your source files.
  3. Inspect the imported diagram. Check connectors, labels, layers, page sizes and specialist shapes; confirm that elements remain editable where you need them to.
  4. Export for the next person in the workflow. Check the output format your collaborators actually need, then open the exported file in the receiving application and inspect it again.
  5. Decide based on the result. If key elements break or become uneditable, keep Visio for those documents or choose a tool and workflow that meets the requirement; do not infer success from the filename extension alone.

How to make the final choice

  • Start with draw.io for broadly useful, visually edited diagrams.
  • Pick LibreOffice Draw if an installed drawing tool in an open-source office suite best matches your desktop workflow.
  • Use Mermaid if diagrams should be expressed and maintained as text with documentation.
  • Choose yEd when imported spreadsheet or XML data and automatic graph layout are central to the task.
  • Use Excalidraw for sketch-like whiteboarding rather than assuming it is a replacement for formal Visio diagramming.
  • For a licensing requirement, distinguish free-of-charge software from software explicitly identified as open source, and confirm the terms that apply to your use.
