You can connect Auth0 to a Hono app with a small middleware setup: install @auth0/auth0-hono, mount auth0(), then protect the routes that need a signed-in user with requiresAuth(). The five-line idea describes the code integration—not a complete deployment. You still need an Auth0 application and the required environment configuration.
Install the Auth0 Hono SDK
Auth0’s official SDK for Hono is @auth0/auth0-hono. Install it in your project with npm:
npm install @auth0/auth0-hono
See the Auth0 SDK repository for its quick start and configuration details.
Add the middleware and protect a route
The compact integration mounts Auth0 middleware on the app, then adds authentication to the routes that require it. This TypeScript example follows the SDK’s documented quick-start shape:

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
import { Hono } from 'hono'
import { auth0, requiresAuth } from '@auth0/auth0-hono'
const app = new Hono()
app.use('*', auth0())
app.get('/profile', requiresAuth(), (c) => {
const user = c.var.auth0.user
return c.json({ name: user?.name, sub: user?.sub })
})
export default app
auth0() supplies shared authentication functionality, while requiresAuth() guards the specific handler. In this example, the profile endpoint reads the user from Hono’s context and returns the name and Auth0 subject identifier when available. The repository documents that an unauthenticated request to a protected route receives a 401 response.
Configure your Auth0 application and deployment
The short code example depends on configuration values that must match your Auth0 application and the URL where your Hono app runs. The SDK documents these required values:

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
AUTH0_DOMAINAUTH0_CLIENT_IDAUTH0_SESSION_ENCRYPTION_KEY— at least 32 characters, according to the SDK repository.APP_BASE_URL
AUTH0_CLIENT_SECRET is optional in general and required for the refresh-token flow. Keep secrets in server-side environment configuration or your deployment platform’s secret manager; never embed them in browser-visible code. Follow the repository’s setup instructions to configure the Auth0 application and environment for your chosen deployment.
Know which routes the SDK provides
By default, the SDK sets up login, callback, and logout routes at /auth/login, /auth/callback, and /auth/logout. It also handles session encryption and cookies, exposes user context, supports backchannel logout, and can refresh tokens. Check the repository documentation for options if your application needs different route paths or behavior.

Authentication and authorization are separate decisions. requiresAuth() answers whether a request has an authenticated user. Your authorization policy answers whether that user may perform a particular action. The SDK also documents helpers for organization membership, claims, scopes, and permissions. Scope and permission checks must run after requiresAuth(), so the authenticated identity is available when those checks execute.
Check runtime support before deploying
Hono runs across multiple JavaScript environments, but that does not mean every runtime has the same support status in the Auth0 SDK. The SDK README distinguishes its listed tiers:
Rank #4
- Ultra-Compact FIDO2 Security Key - Plug-and-stay or carry on a keychain. This USB-A hardware security key offers portable, always-on protection for desktop and mobile use. (Item Size: 0.75 X 0.74 IN x 0.25 IN)
- USB-A Hardware Key for All Devices - Works with USB-A ports on PC, Mac, Android, and other laptop/notebook device. Enables secure, cross-platform login with FIDO2.0 passkey support.
- FIDO Certified Security Key - Meets FIDO and FIDO2 standards. Works with Google, Microsoft, GitHub, Dropbox, and more. Please check service compatibility before purchase.
- Passwordless Login with Passkey - Supports passkey login via WebAuthn and CTAP2. Enjoy password-free sign-ins where supported. Not all websites or services currently support passkeys.
- Advanced Multi-Factor Authentication - Offers 200 FIDO2 passkey slots and 50 OATH-TOTP slots. Strong, flexible 2FA/MFA support across various apps and authentication platforms.

Multi-tenant apps with varying environment bindings
The SDK documentation says it captures environment configuration from the first request. If different requests can carry different environment bindings, do not rely on environment variables alone: create separate auth0() middleware instances with explicit configuration, as described in the repository.

- USB-C or tap via NFC for easy authentication on any compatible device. No drivers needed; optional Kensington software available for advanced management features.
- Works across Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, ChromeOS, and supports Passkeys and Apple ID.
- Slim, keychain-ready form for easy carry and on-the-go authentication
- IP68-rated for dependable performance
- FIDO CTAP 2.1 for enhanced security features (e.g. resident credentials, Passkey support) and backwards compatibility with CTAP 2. FIDO2 L2 certified security for phishing resistant protection against identity theft and unauthorized access.
Backchannel logout requiring session-ID invalidation
By default, sessions use encrypted cookies and are stateless. The repository says invalidating sessions by session ID during backchannel logout requires a stateful store; it describes a Workers KV store for Cloudflare Workers. This storage decision is relevant when your logout requirements call for that invalidation behavior, not as a universal prerequisite for the basic middleware setup.
