An AI agent should store a user’s preferences as separate, time-aware claims—not flatten them into a timeless profile. When a preference changes, it can record what was said, when and where it applies, and how it relates to earlier information, then use the claim that fits the current task. If the scope is unclear and affects what the agent will do, it should ask.

Why one profile sentence is not enough

A profile such as “likes concise answers” looks simple, but it leaves important questions unanswered: Did the user say this directly, or did the agent infer it? Was it a general preference or just for one task? Is it still current? A memory system that stores only the summary may retrieve the right words but apply them in the wrong situation.

“One belief per fact” is a useful design metaphor, not an established technical standard. It means keeping claims distinct enough that an agent can update one preference without silently rewriting unrelated parts of a person’s profile. A preference is also not the same kind of claim as a biographical fact, a goal, a constraint, or an inference; retaining that distinction helps the agent interpret what it remembers.

What should a memory record contain?

The following is a practical design pattern synthesized from several research approaches, not a schema mandated by a paper or shared standard:

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Claim: the subject, predicate, and value—for example, “answer style: concise.”
  • Claim type: fact, preference, goal, constraint, or inference.
  • Source and evidence: what the user said or did, with a pointer to the supporting conversation or event when available.
  • Time: when the claim was stated and, if known, the period during which it applies.
  • Strength: whether it was explicit or inferred, and the system’s confidence where relevant.
  • Status and relation: whether it is current, superseded, disputed, or withdrawn, and which earlier claim it updates or qualifies.

For example, an agent might retain “prefers concise answers” as a general preference and “wants detailed explanations for this project” as a separate, narrower one. If the user later says, “I don’t want concise answers anymore,” the agent can record that as a change related to the earlier claim. If the user says only “make this one more detailed,” the agent should not promote that task-specific request to a global preference without evidence.

How should an agent handle a changed preference?

A useful update loop is to clarify when needed, act on the applicable evidence, and learn from feedback. Meta AI Research’s February 26, 2026, description of Personalized Agents from Human Feedback (PAHF) presents those elements as a research approach: resolve ambiguity before acting, ground an action in explicit per-user memory, and incorporate post-action feedback when preferences drift. It does not establish that every new statement should automatically overwrite an older one.

  1. Identify the scope. Determine whether the new statement is global, limited to a topic or project, or temporary. Preserve its wording and context rather than immediately turning it into a broad profile rule.
  2. Check for a meaningful conflict. Compare it with relevant earlier claims. A new preference may replace an old one, narrow it, or simply apply in a different context.
  3. Ask if the ambiguity changes the action. If “I want more detail” could mean “for this answer” or “from now on,” ask a short clarification before making a durable update when that distinction matters.
  4. Record the update and its evidence. Preserve the new claim’s source and time, and connect it to the older claim when it revises or qualifies it.
  5. Retrieve by relevance, scope, and time. Use the claim that best fits the present request; do not surface an older preference as current simply because it remains in storage.
  6. Use feedback to adjust cautiously. Treat corrections and post-action feedback as evidence about the preference. Distinguish a direct correction from a reaction that could have several explanations.

How current research models memory and change

Research systems illustrate different pieces of this problem; they are not a settled common architecture, and their descriptions do not by themselves demonstrate production readiness or superiority.

System or work What it describes What that contributes to the design question
Hindsight, ACL Anthology, 2026 Separate memory networks for world facts, experiences, observations, and opinions, with retain, recall, and reflect operations. Shows why a system may benefit from distinguishing what it treats as fact from what it treats as a belief or observation.
APEX-MEM, ACL Anthology, 2026 Temporally grounded events in a property graph, append-only storage to preserve information’s evolution, and retrieval intended to address conflicting or evolving information. Illustrates how retaining a history can help an agent reason about change rather than replacing every earlier record.
RHELM, Microsoft benchmark site A benchmark flow that applies factual and state updates to a profile, periodically recalibrates it, and prunes outdated entities. Brings profile evolution and outdated information into evaluation, rather than testing only a static profile.
MARS, “Agentic Recommender System with Hierarchical Belief-State Memory,” arXiv, May 19, 2026 Separate representations for events, mutable preferences, and a synthesized profile; preference records carry strength and evidence. Illustrates how a compact profile can coexist with more specific preference evidence.
Nguyen, Qiu, Chen, and Liew, graph-based personalized-memory survey preprint, arXiv, September 8, 2026 A survey of graph-based memory representation, evolution, retrieval, and evaluation that describes a fragmented design space. Supports comparing approaches against their update and retrieval needs instead of treating graph storage as automatically best.

The systems emphasize different mechanisms. A graph, an append-only event history, or a synthesized profile may each suit particular requirements; the cited work does not establish one universally correct structure or conflict-resolution rule.

How can users understand and correct an agent’s memory?

Memory quality includes whether a user can make sense of what the agent retained. The authors of “Users’ Expectations and Practices with Agent Memory,” a CHI 2025 Late-Breaking Work paper, report interviews with six people who regularly used personalized AI tools with long-term memory, alongside analysis of public online posts and discussion threads. They report that users often have an incomplete understanding of how systems remember and recall information. The six interviews offer contextual evidence, not a population estimate.

As a design implication, an agent should make it understandable which claims it is using and provide ways for users to inspect, correct, or remove stored entries. A correction should be traceable to the item it changes; removal should be an available user control, not something a system assumes from silence. These are recommendations, not claims that the cited research systems or any particular product already provide those controls.

How should memory systems be evaluated?

Recall alone is not enough. A system might retrieve an old preference accurately and still apply it after the user has changed their mind. RHELM is presented as a benchmark for realistic, heterogeneous, evolving long-horizon assistant memory. PAHF describes benchmarks aimed at both initial preference learning and adaptation after persona shifts. Those stated aims are not a head-to-head result identifying a winner, nor do they cover every aspect of real-world personalization or user trust.

A useful evaluation should test whether the agent:

  • distinguishes explicit user statements from inferences and other claim types;
  • handles a newer preference without discarding unrelated profile information;
  • recognizes differences between general, project-specific, and temporary preferences;
  • attributes a retrieved claim to its evidence and relevant time;
  • handles contradictory or ambiguous history appropriately, including asking when needed;
  • retrieves the applicable preference after intervening conversations; and
  • lets the user understand and correct the memory being applied.

These checks focus evaluation on adaptation and evidence, not only on whether a system can repeat a remembered sentence.
