Connect the antenna’s coaxial output to the television’s ANT IN, RF IN, or antenna input, then set the TV tuner to antenna or broadcast mode and scan for channels. If you want to reuse cable or satellite wiring, first confirm that it provides a continuous path from the antenna to the room; splitters and older distribution equipment can affect reception.
Connect one antenna to one TV
- Find the right connections. Locate the coaxial output on the antenna and the television’s antenna or RF input. Antennas Direct says its antenna connectors are female F-type connectors designed for standard RG6 coaxial cable; check the labels and connectors on your own equipment. See Antennas Direct’s HDTV antenna installation guide.
- Attach the coaxial cable. Connect one end to the antenna and the other to the TV’s antenna input. Tighten the connectors securely by hand. If you do not have a suitable lead, RG6 coaxial cable with compatible F-type connectors is an appropriate option for equipment with those connections. The manufacturer notes that coaxial cable may be sold separately in its ANT751 quick-start guide.
- Select the tuner source and scan. In the TV’s channel setup, select the antenna, air, or broadcast option if offered, then start a channel scan. Menu names vary by television. Use the TV’s instructions if you cannot find channel setup.
- Test the intended location. Scan with the antenna where you plan to use it. If you move or aim the antenna, scan again so the TV can update its channel list. The combiner instructions also direct users to scan after repositioning an antenna.
If the TV does not have a compatible antenna input or tuner, connect the antenna to a compatible TV converter box instead. Connect the box to the TV using the output and method specified by that box’s manufacturer.
Reuse cable or satellite wiring in the home
Existing coaxial cable in a home may carry an antenna signal to another room, but the wall outlet must be connected to a usable path from the antenna. Do not assume every outlet is linked to the same network. Cable or satellite installations may also include splitters, diplexers, or other distribution components that need inspection and may interfere with the antenna feed. Antennas Direct discusses these wiring considerations in its antenna FAQs.
- First, connect the antenna directly to one TV and scan for channels.
- If that works, connect the antenna feed to the in-home coax network and test the TV outlet you want to use.
- If reception worsens, bypass the splitter or other distribution component and test again. Reintroduce components one at a time to find where reception changes.
Check that the cable reaches the intended room and inspect accessible connections for loose fittings, corrosion, or visible damage. A long cable run can also contribute to signal loss. If a direct connection works but the in-wall route does not, the issue is likely somewhere in the distribution path; the wiring may need tracing or repair.

Connect an antenna to several TVs
A coaxial splitter can divide one antenna feed among multiple televisions, with an additional coaxial lead running from the splitter to each TV. Splitting can reduce the signal available at each tuner, so test reception on one TV before adding the splitter. If reception drops after splitting, bypass the splitter to check whether it or another part of the distribution path is responsible.
Consider a distribution amplifier only after confirming that the antenna receives a signal and checking for losses from splitters, cable condition, or a long run. An amplifier can help address distribution loss, but it cannot create a broadcast signal that the antenna is not receiving. Antennas Direct covers antenna reception problems in its HDTV antenna troubleshooting guide.

When a UHF/VHF combiner is appropriate
A UHF/VHF combiner is for a setup with separate UHF and VHF antennas: it accepts a lead from each antenna and combines them into one output for a TV or converter box. In Antennas Direct’s example, the two antennas connect to the combiner’s separate inputs using equal-length, short coaxial leads. Follow the particular combiner’s instructions and scan for channels after connecting it. This is a specialized two-antenna setup, not a requirement for connecting one antenna to a TV. See the manufacturer’s UHF/VHF combining guide and combiner quick-start instructions.
Improve reception before adding equipment
Reception depends on the antenna’s location and the signal path. Terrain, buildings, trees, and other obstacles can affect it. Try moving or aiming the antenna, then run another channel scan. Test it in the intended position before fixing it permanently; Antennas Direct recommends testing placement and considering obstacles in its outdoor antenna installation tips.

The manufacturer suggests considering a preamplifier when splitters are in use or the cable run exceeds 100 feet. Treat that as manufacturer guidance, not a universal cutoff or a guarantee of better reception. Check antenna placement, cable condition, and distribution losses first.

- Keep the antenna and installation work clear of power lines.
- Consider coax grounding and follow applicable local electrical codes. Antennas Direct advises consulting a professional electrician; its installation guidance says grounding can protect equipment from voltage surges caused by nearby lightning strikes, but not from a direct strike.
- Roof and mast work can involve falls, wind exposure, and structural risks. Use a qualified installer if the work is beyond your experience or cannot be done safely.

If the TV finds no channels
- Check that the lead runs from the antenna to the TV’s antenna or RF input, not an unrelated input.
- Confirm the tuner is set to antenna, air, or broadcast mode, then run a fresh channel scan.
- Connect the antenna directly to one TV to bypass splitters and older distribution equipment.
- Check the coax route, fittings, cable condition, and whether the outlet is actually connected to the antenna feed.
- Move or aim the antenna and scan again.
- Investigate amplification only after confirming reception at the antenna and identifying possible losses along the cable or distribution path.
