There is no single best payment method for every freelancer. For US and Canadian examples, direct ACH can be inexpensive for domestic payments, while a multi-currency service such as Wise may suit cross-border billing; card processors make checkout familiar but add processing costs. Compare the full fee stack, when funds are usable in your bank, and how easily your client can pay—not just the advertised percentage. The figures below are examples presented in a FreshBooks guide updated April 30, 2026, not universal or guaranteed rates. Check the guide and confirm current provider terms for your country, account, and transaction.

How to compare freelancer payment methods

A payment’s real cost can include a fixed transaction fee, a percentage fee, cross-border charges, currency conversion, and bank withdrawal costs. Timing also has two parts: how long the payment takes to process and when the money is available in your bank. Add client convenience, supported countries and currencies, possible holds, and the work required to match payments to invoices and books.

  • Total cost: Compare the amount you receive in the currency you intend to keep or spend, including conversion and withdrawal charges.
  • Usable-funds timing: A processor’s payout estimate is not necessarily the same as the time from invoice to cleared funds.
  • Client effort: A familiar checkout or straightforward bank instruction can reduce friction and help avoid delays.
  • Operations: Holds, eligibility rules, and reconciliation features can matter as much as the base processing rate.

Fees and availability vary by country, currency, account, and payment rail. The six detailed comparisons below are the options for which the FreshBooks guide provides fee examples. They are not a verified, like-for-like ranking of 11 current fee schedules.

Six payment methods compared

Method Fee examples in the FreshBooks guide Timing example Useful context
PayPal Domestic US/Canada payments: 3.49% + $0.49; card or Apple Pay: 2.99% + $0.49. International transactions may add 1.5%, plus conversion charges described as typically 3–4% above mid-market. Standard payout: 1–2 business days; instant payout costs extra. Familiar and quick to set up, but cross-border and conversion costs can add up.
Stripe Domestic US/Canada cards: 2.9% + $0.30; international cards add 0.8%; currency conversion adds 2%. Two business days as a standard payout example; instant payout costs extra. Supports payment links and integrated checkout.
Direct bank transfer US ACH: free to receive in the guide’s example. Canadian Interac e-Transfer: usually free, though some banks charge $1–$1.50. Domestic incoming wires: $10–$25; international wires may add currency markups. US ACH: 1–3 business days in the example. “Bank transfer” covers different rails and bank fee schedules; it is not one universal rate.
Wise Currency conversion: 0.35%–2%, commonly 0.5%–0.7% for major pairs. Domestic receipt: free in the example. Cross-border same-currency receipt: 0.3% up to 1 CAD. The guide also cites a one-time $31 charge to unlock local account details in 24 currencies. Many payouts: 1–2 business days. Positioned for receiving and billing in multiple currencies; the guide says local receipt is available in 10+ currencies.
Checks Domestic checks are usually free in the example. US processing of international checks: $10–$30. Usable cash: 1–2 weeks domestically, longer internationally. Some government and corporate clients still use checks; this is generally a client-required fallback, not a speed-focused option.
FreshBooks Payments Card processing: 2.9% + $0.30. US ACH: 1%, capped at $10. FreshBooks software starts at $23/month in the guide. 1–2 business days for payouts. Integrates invoicing, payments, time tracking, and expenses. Include the software subscription when calculating total cost.

All listed prices and timing figures are examples reported by the FreshBooks guide updated April 30, 2026. They are primarily US/Canada oriented and may not apply to your account, location, or payment type. Which method fits your situation?

For domestic US client payments

Ask whether the client can pay by ACH and compare its bank-transfer process and timing with a card link. The guide’s US ACH example is free to receive, while card examples carry percentage and fixed fees. If you choose a card processor, include the fixed fee in your estimate, particularly for smaller invoices.

For Canadian domestic payments

Interac e-Transfer is usually free in the guide’s example, but some banks charge $1–$1.50. Check the applicable bank terms rather than treating all transfers as free. Incoming wire fees in the guide’s domestic examples are substantially different, at $10–$25.

Rank #2
Finance Record Book for Small Churches
  • Enough forms for 1 year for churches of approximately 150 members
  • 5 3/16" x 9"
  • Includes forms for church receipts, member contributions, and disbursements

For international clients or multiple currencies

Compare the complete conversion and cross-border fee stack in the currency you expect to receive. Wise is presented as a multi-currency option, but its conversion range and local-account availability vary; PayPal and Stripe examples add international or conversion charges to their base rates. A quoted transaction percentage alone does not establish which service leaves you with more.

When clients need a card checkout

Stripe offers payment links and integrated checkout; PayPal is described as familiar and quick to set up. These can make payment convenient for clients, but compare their applicable card, international, and conversion fees. Faster payout options may cost extra.

When invoicing and bookkeeping workflow matter

FreshBooks Payments combines payments with invoicing, time tracking, and expenses. That integration may reduce administrative work, but processing fees and the software subscription are separate parts of the cost. Compare the value of the workflow with what you already use before moving your payment collection into paid software.

When a client requires a check

Checks remain a practical fallback for some corporate and government clients. Allow for the longer time until funds are usable, especially for international checks, and ask the client about an alternative if timing is important.

Methods not fully comparable from these fee examples

Payoneer may be a candidate where a freelance marketplace integrates it, but the available information does not establish its fees or verify eligibility for a particular freelancer. See the limited FreelancerTools comparison page for that qualified use-case mention; its search-result excerpt was published July 4, 2026, and the underlying page was not accessible. Current fee schedules and eligibility were not established here for Payoneer, Square, Venmo Business, Cash App Business, or marketplace escrow payouts. Do not infer that these are unavailable or unsuitable; verify the relevant provider and marketplace terms directly before comparing them.

A practical way to choose

  1. Start with the client and payment route. Confirm which methods the client can actually use, and whether the payment is domestic, cross-border, card-based, or on a particular bank rail.
  2. Calculate the net receipt. Apply percentage and fixed fees, then add international charges, conversion, bank receipt, or withdrawal fees that apply to your case.
  3. Check the funds timeline. Confirm the expected processing and payout time, what “payout” means, and whether faster access carries a fee.
  4. Check country and currency support. Verify that both you and the client can use the method for the currencies and locations involved.
  5. Include operational cost. Account for possible holds, client steps, invoice matching, and any subscription required for integrated features.

Before accepting a method for a large or recurring invoice, check the provider’s current terms for your account and region. A low headline rate is only useful if the client can pay it, the funds arrive when needed, and the final received amount works for your business.
