Yes—but for a full Linux desktop session, use X410’s Floating Desktop mode with a Linux window manager or desktop environment. Microsoft’s built-in WSLg is designed to run Linux GUI apps as individual windows integrated with Windows, not to provide a full desktop experience. If you only need Linux apps alongside Windows apps, WSLg is the more direct fit.
WSLg and X410 solve different desktop problems
WSLg is Microsoft’s built-in way to run supported Linux GUI applications from WSL with Windows integration. X11 and Wayland apps can appear alongside Windows applications, with conveniences such as Start menu entries, taskbar presence, Alt-Tab, and clipboard use. Microsoft explicitly states that “Support for GUI apps on WSL does not provide a full desktop experience.”
X410 is a Windows X server. Its two modes determine whether you see separate Linux application windows or a contained Linux desktop session:

These distinctions are documented by X410 and Microsoft. There is no documented quantitative benchmark here that establishes one option as faster than the other.

Choose the X410 mode that matches the experience you want
Windowed Apps: separate Linux application windows
In Windowed Apps mode, X410 displays Linux GUI applications as separate windows. It is not the mode for running a Linux window manager such as i3; X410’s documentation says a window manager cannot be used in this mode.
Floating Desktop: one window containing a Linux desktop
Floating Desktop opens a resizable X410 display window in which you can run a Linux window manager or a desktop environment such as Xfce. The desktop session stays within that display rather than presenting each application as a separate Windows-style window.

Check WSLg prerequisites before setting it up
Microsoft’s documented requirements for Linux GUI support are WSL 2, Windows 10 build 19044 or later or Windows 11, and a graphics driver that matches the system. The instructions are for WSL 2; do not assume the same GUI support applies to WSL 1.

- Check that Windows is on a supported release and install the matching vGPU driver, following Microsoft’s Linux GUI apps guide.
- Update WSL by running
wsl --updatein PowerShell or Command Prompt. - Restart WSL by running
wsl --shutdown, then launch your distribution again.
Those commands and prerequisites follow Microsoft’s documented setup guidance; the guide also recommends updating WSL and restarting it.

X410’s WSL 2 setup guide describes TCP/IP connection problems that can occur after the computer sleeps, the network changes, or a VPN changes. The page discusses VSOCK as an alternative, but also notes that Microsoft had not announced an official WSL 2 VSOCK method at the time the guide was written. Treat that as X410’s workaround discussion, not as a guarantee of current Microsoft support, and check current documentation before depending on VSOCK.
