A self-hosted license server can give a software seller direct control over issuing, activating, and revoking product licenses—but it also makes the seller responsible for uptime, backups, security, and customer support. Building one is most compelling when control or a specific workflow matters more than the engineering and operating work; it is not automatically cheaper or safer than a managed service.
What a license server has to do
A license server manages the relationship between a product and a customer’s entitlement. Generating a key is only the start. Depending on the product, the system may also need to record activations, enforce a device limit, handle expiration and revocation, identify eligible versions, and provide protected downloads.
That makes licensing a workflow spanning checkout, fulfillment, the application, and support. A payment platform can trigger license issuance or revocation, but payment and access enforcement are separate responsibilities. Before choosing a system, work out what should happen after purchase, refund, a lost device, a customer changing computers, or a server outage.
Offline verification does not provide live control
One approach is to sign a license with a private key and ship the corresponding public key inside the application. The application can then verify the signature locally without sending the license to a server. A signature can establish that a token was issued by someone holding the matching private key; it does not establish that the customer’s entitlement is still current.

While disconnected, the application cannot learn that a license was revoked after issuance or that the customer has exceeded an activation limit. A signed token may also have an expiration date, but that only limits how long it can be used before another check is needed. For applications that need current seat counts or prompt revocation, periodic online checks are necessary.
Keymaster’s documentation describes combining quick offline verification with periodic online check-ins and a grace period for temporary connectivity problems. That is one documented design, not an independently tested security guarantee. The appropriate balance depends on whether uninterrupted offline use or timely enforcement matters more for the product.
What self-hosting changes
With a self-hosted service, the seller takes on responsibilities that a managed provider may otherwise handle. They include deployment, monitoring, database and signing-key backups, upgrades, incident response, and answering customer questions when activation fails. If customers’ applications need to contact an activation API over the internet, that API must also be reachable and kept secure.

Protect signing keys and persistent data
The signing private key is a continuity dependency: if it is lost, the seller may no longer be able to issue licenses accepted by clients already shipped with the corresponding public key. Keymaster warns about this risk; Keysat warns that losing its persistent data volume invalidates issued licenses. Treat both the signing material and the license database as critical data.

- Back up the key and persistent license data securely, and document who can restore them.
- Test restoring backups rather than assuming they work.
- Plan key rotation before shipping clients that trust a particular public key; consider how existing installations will learn to trust a replacement.
Account for outages and support
An online activation service can become a point of friction if it is unavailable, customers change hardware, or a legitimate user reaches a seat limit. Decide how the client behaves during an outage, what a grace period permits, and how a customer can deactivate an old machine or recover access. A self-hosted server does not remove support work; it puts more of the recovery path in the seller’s hands.
Build, self-host a platform, or use a managed service?
There is no single standard architecture for a self-hosted license server. The projects below document materially different approaches, so compare their actual features and obligations rather than treating “self-hosted” as one product category.

These descriptions come from the projects or vendor themselves, not independent deployment or security tests. Keygate describes its license as AGPL-3.0. Keysat describes its license as source-available with restrictions on redistribution and public hosting. Read the applicable license terms before modifying a platform, redistributing it, or offering it to others as a hosted service.

Start with the requirements that are hard to compromise on. If the main need is simply to deliver a key after checkout, a custom activation service may add more ongoing work than value. If the application needs device limits, usage tracking, protected downloads, or a particular offline policy, compare whether an existing platform supports those needs before building.

- Choose custom development when the licensing rules are distinctive and you can own maintenance, support, and recovery.
- Choose a self-hosted platform when its documented capabilities and license terms fit, and you want control without implementing every component yourself.
- Choose a managed service when reducing operational responsibility matters more than controlling the infrastructure, after checking pricing, data handling, portability, and outage behavior.
Do not assume self-hosting is cheaper. The cost depends on current service pricing, engineering time, hosting, maintenance, and the value of time spent on support and incident response. The available project accounts do not establish a general cost comparison or reliability ranking.

Connect payments to licensing deliberately
Keep the checkout event and the authorization decision conceptually separate. A store or payment processor can notify a licensing service that a purchase succeeded or was refunded; the licensing service then decides whether the associated entitlement should be issued, retained, or revoked. Confirm how the integration handles duplicate notifications, delayed events, refunds, and failed requests instead of assuming a checkout integration enforces access by itself.
Keymaster documents HMAC-signed activation webhooks, while Keysat documents BTCPay integration and License Deck lists checkout connections. These are project-documented capabilities, not proof that a particular payment flow is suitable for every seller.
What other makers’ accounts can—and cannot—tell you
A DEV Community account describes its author’s decision to build KeyMint around Gumroad-related licensing needs and a desire to avoid a monthly licensing SaaS fee. That is one maker’s motivation, not evidence that all sellers will save money by building. The account also reports zero sales at launch, illustrating that solving licensing and finding customers are distinct challenges; it does not establish a general relationship between product quality and sales.
The available project documentation and maker account do not independently establish security, performance, market-wide prices, or which option is most reliable. Those questions require evaluation of the specific service, deployment, and terms a seller plans to use.
