Project HydraFusion is a research preview in GitHub Copilot CLI that chooses a workflow for a coding request—not just a model. Depending on the task, it can run one model, draft with a quality check and possible escalation, or have another model critique a draft before the original model revises it.
What Project HydraFusion is
GitHub describes HydraFusion as runtime orchestration across models from multiple providers. In practical terms, it is a workflow router inside Copilot CLI, not a separate coding editor. Andrea Liliana Griffiths, a GitHub senior product manager, summed up the idea as deciding “how to solve the task, not just which model to call.” Her explainer on DEV Community was posted September 21, 2026.
The aim is to use the lightest workflow likely to meet a quality bar. A straightforward request may need one model; another may benefit from a check, escalation, or independent review. Those extra steps involve additional model work, so the design balances expected quality against calls, cost, and time.
How the three workflows differ
| Path | What happens | When the extra work may help |
|---|---|---|
| Single | One model handles the task directly. | A request appears clear and suitable for a direct run. |
| Cascade | An efficient model produces a draft. A quality gate assesses it and may escalate the task to another model. | The draft may be adequate, but the gate can call for more capability when needed. |
| Critique | A separate model family reviews the draft in a read-only, tool-less context. The original drafter then gets one chance to revise. | Independent feedback may catch weaknesses that another unaided attempt would miss. |
These are different ways to allocate model effort, not a published ranking of which path always produces the best result. The available descriptions do not establish an independent head-to-head consumer test across all three.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the benchmark does—and does not—show
GitHub reported that on TerminalBench 2.1, HydraFusion improved verified task quality by 4.9 percentage points at 67% lower estimated cost compared with Claude Opus 5. GitHub presented this as an offline evaluation result, not a guarantee for everyday Copilot CLI requests. The release is titled “Project HydraFusion: Frontier quality via multi-model orchestration”; its reported figures are available here through an indexed reproduction of the release.
The comparison baseline matters. Beating an always-Claude-Opus-5 workflow on that benchmark does not establish that HydraFusion costs less than every other Copilot choice. A small task handled by one inexpensive Auto pick could cost less than a Cascade or Critique run, because those paths can add model calls. Griffiths also says token use compared with manually passing context among models is still being tested.

Safeguards described for the preview
Griffiths’s explainer lists runtime safeguards intended to control execution. These are descriptions of the system’s design, not independently verified test results:
- Cost accounting covers every leg of a multi-step workflow.
- Timeouts and cancellation are supported.
- Critique runs in an isolated, tool-less review context.
- A failed or cancelled run does not apply a patch.
- Routing is validated before execution.
When to try HydraFusion
Griffiths recommends starting with a well-scoped, first-turn coding task in Copilot autopilot. That is a useful fit for evaluating a workflow that can select a path without relying on a long back-and-forth refinement history. Multi-turn polishing is described as a future area, rather than an established strength of the current preview.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
After a run, Copilot CLI points users to /feedback and a GitHub Community discussion for feedback. Because HydraFusion remains a research preview, its model pool, routing behavior, availability, and names may change.
What remains uncertain
The published descriptions explain the three paths and report an offline benchmark, but they do not provide a guarantee of savings or quality for a particular task, nor a complete consumer comparison of latency and cost across the paths. Treat HydraFusion as an experimental way to route work, and judge its usefulness against the task and workflow you actually run.
