Apple says a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T may lose cellular service and be unable to make calls. The company’s response draws an important line: iOS 27.0.1 and a carrier settings update are intended to help prevent additional cases, but Apple says devices that have already lost service require hardware replacement. That is a meaningful remedy for affected owners, but it also leaves customers needing to work out whether an update is enough or their phone needs service.
What happened to some AT&T iPhone 18 Pro Max users?
Apple told 9to5Mac on October 2, 2026, that it had identified an issue affecting a “small number” of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T. Apple said the issue may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls. Earlier reports described symptoms including SOS status and trouble with calls, texts, and cellular data. AT&T also said calls, data, texts, and 911 calls could be affected on a small number of phones. 9to5Mac’s October 2 report, MacRumors’ report on AT&T’s statement, and MacRumors’ September 25 report describe the incident and reported symptoms.
“Small number” is Apple’s qualitative description, not a published count or failure rate. Reports of complaints and forum posts do not establish how many phones are affected or what share of devices sold they represent.
Will iOS 27.0.1 fix the cellular problem?
It depends on the device’s condition. Apple said iOS 27.0.1 and a carrier settings update were intended to help prevent the issue from occurring for additional users. AT&T urged impacted customers to install iOS 27.0.1 promptly. The carrier settings update was reported as rolling out automatically over several days.

Apple’s distinction matters: an update meant to reduce future risk is not the same as a repair for a device that has already lost service. Tom’s Guide reported that some users said an update did not resolve their problem, but that does not change Apple’s stated replacement guidance for devices already affected. Tom’s Guide’s October 2 report includes AT&T’s customer message and spokesperson statement.
What should you do if your iPhone 18 Pro Max shows SOS on AT&T?
- If service has not failed: install iOS 27.0.1 and check for the carrier settings update. Apple strongly encouraged all iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to update.
- If the phone has already lost service: contact Apple or AT&T and explain that the device has lost cellular service. Apple’s reported guidance says affected devices need hardware replacement; do not rely on the update as a guaranteed fix.
- If you are unsure which case applies: contact either company for guidance. AT&T directed customers with questions to AT&T or Apple.
The available guidance does not establish that every affected customer received a replacement promptly, so ask the company handling your case what remedy applies to your device.

Is the cause known, and how widespread is the issue?
No confirmed root cause or independently verified affected-device count is established in the cited coverage. Reports noted that the US iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a different modem arrangement from other new iPhone 18 models, but left its relevance uncertain. That observation does not establish a modem defect, a carrier provisioning fault, or a software bug as the cause.

The response appears to recognize the seriousness of losing calls, texts, and data—and potentially access to 911—and it gives already affected owners a remedy: hardware replacement. Apple and AT&T also communicated update instructions and directed customers with questions to contact them.

The harder part for an owner is distinguishing prevention from remediation. A customer may see an update announcement and reasonably wonder whether installing it will restore a phone that already shows SOS. Apple’s stated guidance says it will not necessarily do that: the updates are meant to prevent additional cases, while devices that have already lost service require replacement. The available statements establish that distinction, but they do not show how smoothly individual support cases were handled or how responsibility was divided in practice.
