Plane, OpenProject, Redmine, and Taiga are worthwhile Jira alternatives to shortlist; Kaneo is another option to investigate. They are not interchangeable, and “free” can mean self-hosted community software rather than a free hosted service or a no-cost enterprise feature set. Match each tool to the workflows and Jira features your team actually uses, then pilot it with representative projects before planning a migration.
How to choose a Jira alternative
Start with the work your Jira instance supports, not a feature checklist in isolation. Record how your team plans work, which reports and integrations it relies on, and which governance controls are required. Then compare candidates against those needs.
- Workflow: Does the team need Scrum backlogs and sprints, Kanban boards, or mixed work tracking? Taiga documents Scrum and Kanban workflows; Plane includes cycles and structured work items. Taiga Plane
- Planning breadth: Is issue tracking enough, or do you also need Gantt charts, time tracking, documentation, reporting, or portfolio planning? Redmine’s official feature list includes Gantt charts, calendars, project wikis, time tracking, and custom fields. Redmine
- Hosting and operating responsibility: Self-hosting gives an organization control over its deployment, but the organization must operate, update, back up, and secure it. Infrastructure and administration mean self-hosted software should not be treated as having zero total cost.
- Edition boundaries: Check identity controls, audit history, permissions, automation, integrations, and support in the exact edition or hosted plan you would use. Plane, for example, places SSO and audit trails in its Commercial Edition. Plane editions
- Migration and ecosystem: Confirm importer coverage, handling of attachments and history, APIs, integrations, plugins, and how much Jira configuration needs to be recreated. The available information does not establish migration parity or effort for any particular Jira instance.
Free and open-source Jira alternatives to consider
Plane: structured work tracking with cycles and documentation
Plane’s Community Edition is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and can be deployed on Docker or Kubernetes, according to its official page. Its documented features include work items, cycles, modules, pages and documentation, intake, five layout views, a REST API, and webhooks. The Commercial Edition adds governance and enterprise capabilities, including SSO, audit trails, approvals, and additional integrations. Check the current edition boundaries against your requirements before adopting it. Plane plans and features
Redmine: issue tracking with broader project-management tools
Redmine describes itself as a flexible, self-hostable project-management web application released under the GPL. Its official feature list covers multiple projects, role-based access, issue tracking, Gantt charts and calendars, project wikis and forums, time tracking, custom fields, source-control integration, email issue creation, LDAP authentication, and plugins. That range makes Redmine worth evaluating when a team wants project-management tools alongside issue tracking, rather than an agile board alone. The Redmine project page listed releases 6.1.5 and 7.0.2 dated 2026-09-30; check the official site for current releases. Redmine features and releases

Taiga: Scrum and Kanban workflows
Taiga describes itself as free and open source and lists an on-premises hosting option. Its documented features include Kanban workflows, Scrum backlogs and sprint planning, epics and subtasks, estimations, issue and bug tracking, dashboards, reporting, wiki features, and customization. It is a natural candidate for teams that want explicitly agile workflows; verify the current terms of any hosted plan separately. Taiga
OpenProject: a broad-scope candidate to verify
OpenProject appears in recent comparison coverage as an option for teams seeking broader project-management functionality, including Gantt charts. That makes it a reasonable shortlist candidate, but confirm its current features, Community and Enterprise boundaries, and hosted availability in official OpenProject documentation before making a selection. Kaneo: investigate beyond vendor comparisons
Kaneo appears in recent coverage of open-source Jira alternatives, including a comparison published by Kaneo itself. Treat rankings and favorable claims in vendor-authored comparisons as vendor claims; verify specific features and licensing directly before relying on them. Kaneo comparison

Pilot before moving Jira projects
A feature list cannot show whether a replacement will preserve the working habits and information your team depends on. Test candidates with a representative project before committing to a full migration.

- Inventory the Jira setup: List issue types, workflows, fields, permissions, boards, reports, automations, integrations, and project history the team needs.
- Choose a representative pilot: Include typical work and any project-specific complexity that could expose gaps, such as custom fields or integrations.
- Check the target edition: Verify required features, hosting terms, identity controls, audit needs, support, and administration responsibilities for the exact plan or edition.
- Test information transfer: Determine which issues, attachments, comments, history, and relationships can be imported or recreated. Do not assume a one-click or complete Jira migration.
- Have users complete real tasks: Try the team’s normal planning, triage, reporting, and handoffs. Record workflow changes and missing capabilities before deciding whether to proceed.
