Not necessarily. NFS may be involved in a Kubernetes I/O problem, but an error message alone does not prove NFS is the cause—and switching to block storage does not automatically fix filesystem, durability, or application-compatibility issues. First match the workload’s documented storage requirements to the behavior of the current NFS setup; then test a compatible block-backed option under representative conditions. In an air-gapped cluster, that option must also be supportable and maintainable without internet access.

What “block storage with POSIX semantics” means

NFS presents files over a network. A block volume presents a device; it is not, by itself, a POSIX filesystem. If an application expects file operations such as opening files and writing to paths, a block device generally needs a suitable filesystem on it and an appropriate mount. The combination of device, filesystem, mount behavior, and application must be validated. Kubernetes distinguishes volume mode from the storage driver’s capabilities; selecting Block does not establish that a workload’s file-level requirements are met. See the Kubernetes documentation on Persistent Volumes and CSI raw block volumes.

“POSIX semantics” is not a single switch that makes every storage backend interchangeable. Define the operations and guarantees the application depends on—for example, file visibility, locking, permissions and identity mapping, and durable writes—and verify those against the actual backend and configuration.

How to investigate an NFS-related I/O failure

Treat NFS as one hypothesis among several. The Linux nfs(5) manual describes client caching and notes that NFS was not designed to support a true cluster filesystem. That does not mean all NFS implementations fail POSIX operations: protocol version, server and client implementation, mount settings, cache behavior, network conditions, and workload access patterns all matter. Avoid changing mount flags without a failure signature and a clear understanding of server and client requirements. See the Linux nfs(5) manual.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
  1. Identify the workload contract. Check the application’s official storage documentation for persistence, filesystem, concurrency, locking, and durability requirements. Record the operations that fail and whether the issue occurs during normal I/O, restart, recovery, or pod rescheduling.
  2. Collect the failure evidence. Correlate application errors with pod events, node and kernel logs, NFS client/server logs, and the timing of network or server incidents. Distinguish latency or timeouts from permission errors, stale handles, failed writes, and corruption; they point to different lines of investigation.
  3. Inspect NFS configuration end to end. Verify client and server protocol versions, mount options, export permissions, read/write status, UID/GID mapping, and server health. Check network reachability and stability between every node that may run the pod and the NFS server. Kubernetes notes that NFS can allow multiple read-write clients, but a particular export or volume can still be read-only; an access mode declaration alone does not establish application-level locking or durability.
  4. Verify durable-write behavior where data integrity matters. A successful write response is not enough if the application relies on data surviving a crash. Elastic’s corruption guidance says that storage needed for restart recovery must previously have confirmed a durable sync; on Linux, that means fsync() returned successfully. Elastic lists possible corruption causes including filesystem, kernel, firmware, durability configuration, hardware, and third-party modification—not just the remote storage type. Its guidance discusses integrity-focused tools such as fio or stress-ng as diagnostic options; no such test result is implied here. See Elastic’s corruption troubleshooting documentation.
  5. Reproduce under representative load. If considering a replacement, compare it using the workload’s real read/write patterns, concurrency, recovery behavior, and performance targets. A small synthetic test may miss the operation or failure mode that matters.

When NFS may or may not fit the application

Requirements are workload-specific. For Elasticsearch, current Elastic documentation says the path.data filesystem must persist across restarts and behave as though backed by a local disk. It allows properly configured remote block devices and remote filesystems, including NFS, when the remote storage behaves no differently from local storage. That is conditional guidance, not blanket approval for every NFS deployment or a claim that Elasticsearch never supports NFS. See Elasticsearch node settings.

Do not confuse an application’s data path with a shared snapshot repository. Elastic’s separate guidance for shared filesystem snapshot repositories concerns cross-node visibility after operations complete and consistent numeric UID/GID mapping for NFS in that repository use case. Those requirements are useful context when checking identity mapping, but they are not a universal specification for an application data directory. See Elastic’s shared filesystem repository documentation.

What Kubernetes provides—and what it does not

Kubernetes does not include an internal NFS provisioner for StorageClasses; NFS provisioning requires an external provisioner. The Kubernetes NFS CSI driver requires an already configured NFSv3 or NFSv4 server and supports static and dynamic provisioning. Its documentation includes an nfsvers=4.1 example, which is an example rather than a universal setting. Check the driver’s current compatibility information against the cluster version and pin a driver release rather than relying on the moving master branch. See Kubernetes StorageClasses and the NFS CSI driver project.

PersistentVolume access modes and volume modes describe different API properties. A PV may use Filesystem or Block mode, but raw-block support depends on the CSI driver and storage class; Kubernetes does not infer it. Nor does an access mode alone prove the application’s locking, visibility, or durability expectations are satisfied.

How to compare a block-backed alternative in an air gap

There is no universal block-storage product or offline deployment procedure that can be recommended without knowing the cluster, workload, and infrastructure. Evaluate an actual candidate against these criteria:

  • Application fit: required filesystem behavior, write durability, locking, and cross-client visibility.
  • Performance and resilience: latency and IOPS under representative load, failure and recovery behavior, and data availability after a node or device loss.
  • Kubernetes fit: support for the exact distribution and version, CSI driver compatibility, and required access and volume modes.
  • Scheduling and access: whether the workload needs read-write access from one node or multiple nodes, and what happens when a pod is rescheduled.
  • Offline operations: availability of all required images in the private registry, manifests or charts and their dependencies, plus an offline upgrade and support path.
  • Operational cost: administration, monitoring, recovery, hardware or infrastructure needs, and total cost for the intended deployment.

Before choosing, establish the Kubernetes distribution and version, node operating systems, available disks or SAN/iSCSI/Ceph infrastructure, workload requirements, current StorageClass and CSI drivers, image-mirroring process, and air-gap update policy. Local PersistentVolumes may be an option only when workload placement and node-loss behavior are acceptable; they are not a drop-in replacement for shared storage.
