Verdict: NordVPN merits a place on a 2026 VPN shortlist, especially if you value a broad feature set, audited no-logs claims and strong streaming results in independent reviewers’ tests. But the evidence does not establish that it is the best VPN for everyone: test results depend on route and device, streaming access varies by service and region, and the service has practical limits such as a 10-device cap and no port forwarding. Check the renewal terms in your market before subscribing.

What the 2026 test results show

There is meaningful independent test evidence for NordVPN, but it should be read as a set of results from particular tests—not a promise of the same performance on every connection.

Artifact Security comparison

In an August 10, 2026 article, NordVPN reported that Artifact Security compared five providers—NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, ProtonVPN and Surfshark—using a design aligned with AMTSO VPN testing guidelines. The reported test areas included speed, leak protection, website accessibility, feature reliability and connection time. NordVPN said Artifact Security gave it an overall score of 91 and the only Platinum rating in that round. The article also says the result reflects one round of testing. Because this summary appears on NordVPN’s site, treat the rating as a test result reported by the vendor, not an ongoing guarantee. NordVPN’s summary of the Artifact Security comparison.

TechRadar’s route-specific figures

TechRadar described tests across Germany, Singapore, the US West Coast, the US East Coast and the UK, using 55 pinned routes. In that test, it reported NordVPN’s Windows average download speed as 271.9 Mbps, its peak download median as 568.4 Mbps, and an average connection time of 1.8 seconds with 98% success. These are results under TechRadar’s test conditions; they are not expected household speeds and will not predict the result on a different device, server, internet connection or protocol. TechRadar also reported that all five providers passed the leak scenarios it tested. Passing those scenarios is useful evidence, not proof that a VPN cannot leak under other conditions. TechRadar’s report on the comparison.

Tom’s Guide testing

Tom’s Guide says its review team installs VPNs on multiple devices and conducts more than 100 speed tests per provider, along with kill-switch and streaming checks. Its results add a separate set of observations, but—as with any review testing—actual performance can vary with location, device, network and test date. Tom’s Guide’s NordVPN review.

Privacy: audited claims, not a promise of anonymity

NordVPN says its no-logs practices have been reviewed by PwC and Deloitte. Tom’s Guide reports that the sixth review took place in February 2026. NordVPN’s own page gives differing chronology and count descriptions in different sections, so those claims are best described with attribution rather than compressed into a simple audit tally. An audit assesses stated claims within a defined scope and period. It can increase confidence in a provider’s practices, but it does not prove total anonymity, cover every future operating condition or mean that no information about a user can ever be known. A VPN also does not remove the need to protect accounts, devices and browsing habits.

NordVPN’s vendor-authored review describes its encryption and security features; treat those descriptions as company claims unless an independent test cited here specifically establishes a point. NordVPN reproduces this endorsement from PCMag software analyst Max Eddy: “As VPN services go, it’s hard to beat NordVPN. It has a large and diverse collection of servers, an excellent collection of advanced features, strong privacy and security practices, and approachable clients for every major platform.” The quotation is presented on NordVPN’s page, rather than independently gathered for this review. Streaming: strong test results, with service-specific exceptions

Tom’s Guide reports consistently strong streaming results in its tests, but its March 27, 2026 retest found exceptions: YouTube in the US and Amazon Prime in Australia. That is a useful reminder that “works with every streaming service” is too broad. Access can change with the service, country, VPN server and test date, so a result for one region should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Tom’s Guide’s NordVPN review.

If a specific service is the reason you want a VPN, check current results for that service in your country and understand the provider’s refund terms before paying. Streaming platforms can also change how they detect VPN connections, so no review result should be treated as a permanent access guarantee.

Devices, specialist features and practical limits

Ten simultaneous connections

Security.org lists a limit of 10 simultaneous device connections and reports server reach in 137 countries in its review, updated October 1, 2026. NordVPN’s own location-count presentation differs; counts may use different definitions or reflect different update timing, so the figures should not be treated as directly comparable. If you need to cover more than 10 devices at once, check the provider’s current terms and consider whether router-level VPN configuration meets your needs. Security.org’s 2026 review.

Double VPN, port forwarding and torrenting

Security.org notes that Double VPN has a limited set of predefined server pairs. Tom’s Guide reports that NordVPN does not support port forwarding and that not every server supports torrenting, although its reviewers found torrenting usable in their tests. If port forwarding is a requirement for your applications or setup, compare providers on that specific feature rather than assuming it is included. Security.org’s review; Tom’s Guide’s review.

  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Restrictive networks and kill-switch behavior

Security.org cautions that NordVPN does not guarantee access in restrictive countries. Tom’s Guide reports that its team checks kill switches, but the materials cited here do not establish a result for every operating system or configuration. If you rely on a kill switch, verify its behavior on your own device and confirm the precise setting and platform support in current documentation before depending on it.

Price and renewal: check the checkout terms for your country

A reliable current price or renewal figure is not established here, and NordVPN’s plans, discounts and billing terms can vary by market and over time. Tom’s Guide warns that letting a plan renew can mean a substantial price increase. Before purchasing, inspect the checkout page for the total price, billing period, taxes, renewal amount and renewal date. Also read the applicable cancellation and refund terms; do not assume an introductory offer renews at the same rate or that a refund is automatic. Tom’s Guide’s review.

How NordVPN compares with other VPNs

Artifact Security’s reported five-provider comparison provides a useful shortlist—ExpressVPN, Mullvad, ProtonVPN and Surfshark were also included—but the available reported figures do not give a like-for-like breakdown of those providers across the other decision factors. NordVPN’s score of 91 and Platinum rating therefore cannot establish that it is the best choice for every reader or that it beats each alternative on privacy, price, streaming, device support or specialist features.

Compare the alternatives against the requirement that matters most to you: verified streaming access in your region, a specific privacy policy and audit scope, port forwarding, simultaneous device needs, or the full renewal price. For a fair decision, compare current plan terms and platform features directly rather than ranking services from one round of performance testing.

Who should choose NordVPN?

  • Consider it if you want a mainstream VPN with positive streaming observations in reviewer tests, outside reviews of its no-logs claims and a broad feature set.
  • Compare alternatives first if port forwarding is essential, you need more than 10 simultaneous connections, you depend on a particular streaming service in a particular country, or access from a restrictive network is critical.
  • Wait to subscribe until you have checked the renewal amount and terms if the introductory price is the main reason the plan looks attractive.

A VPN-compatible router can be an optional way to cover devices through a router-level VPN setup, but compatibility depends on the specific hardware and configuration. No particular router model is verified here, so check both the router maker’s documentation and NordVPN’s current setup instructions before buying one. NordVPN’s VPN router resource.
