Developer Macs can fill up with project files, app support data, downloaded development components, caches, and temporary files. macOS may group some of that material under System Data, a broad category whose size changes with the Mac’s state—not a diagnosis that everything inside it is safe to delete. Check Storage settings first, identify files you recognize, and remove only what you no longer need.

Why development work can use so much storage

Building and running software involves more than the source files you see in a project folder. Apps and development tools can also use application-support files, downloaded components, caches, and temporary data. Apple’s description of System Data includes caches, virtual memory files, temporary files, fonts, app-support files, plug-ins, and runtime resources.

Apple’s developer guidance says apps should place recoverable content in caches or temporary directories so macOS can purge it when storage is low. Apple also documents storage metrics in Xcode Organizer and lists downloadable Xcode components such as simulators among content that macOS caching can store locally. These sources establish that development workflows can involve generated and downloaded data, but they do not establish typical storage amounts for a developer’s Mac.

What System Data means—and what it does not

System Data is a catch-all category for files that do not fit neatly into other Storage categories. Apple says its contents are managed by macOS and its displayed size varies with the current state of the Mac. It is not a single folder you can safely erase wholesale, and a large figure alone does not identify which files are responsible.

Storage settings do not let you directly select and delete System Data. For files that do not appear in another category, Apple points users to Finder or the app that created them. Avoid removing unfamiliar files just because they seem related to development.

How to find what is taking up space

  1. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier macOS versions, open Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Wait for the view to populate, then review the categories. See Apple’s Storage instructions.
  2. Look for large or familiar items in categories such as Applications, Documents, Downloads, device backups, media, and the Bin. If a file is in the Bin, moving it there has not freed its space; empty the Bin to remove it.
  3. Use Finder or the app that created the data to investigate files that are not identified in Storage settings. Treat the System Data total as a prompt to investigate, not as a list of disposable files.

What to remove, keep, or move

Start with files you recognize and no longer need. Apple’s examples include downloads, unused apps, old iPhone or iPad backups, and media that can be streamed or downloaded again. Before removing anything, consider whether you need it for current work and whether deleting it will mean rebuilding or downloading it again.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
  • Remove: Unneeded files and apps you recognize, using the relevant app or Finder where appropriate.
  • Keep: Project or support data you still rely on; do not assume an item is disposable because it is large or categorized as System Data.
  • Move: Files you want to retain but do not need on the internal drive. Apple recommends moving files such as media to another storage device. An external SSD can preserve access to selected files while freeing internal space, but it does not clear caches or automatically reduce all System Data.

Why available space may not match the amount that looks free

Apple distinguishes available storage from physically free storage: the available-space figure may include purgeable space that macOS can free when needed. macOS can clear safe caches and logs as storage pressure rises, so a cache is not always something you need to delete manually. See Apple’s explanation of available and purgeable storage.

Apple’s public documentation does not give a representative gigabyte estimate for Xcode, simulator data, containers, package-manager caches, or other developer workloads. The amount depends on what is installed and used on a particular Mac, so inspect your own storage rather than relying on a universal figure.
