To migrate domain-joined Windows computers to Microsoft Entra join with less disruption, first map each device’s identity, management, app, network, and resource dependencies; then choose a provisioning route for each device group and validate it with a representative pilot. There is no basis here to promise that an existing PC can be converted in place with its settings and user data automatically retained: Microsoft’s documented Autopilot route for existing devices uses a fresh Windows installation.
What changes during the migration?
This is more than changing a device’s directory relationship. A successful move also depends on how the device is provisioned and managed, how users sign in, and whether their apps and organizational resources remain available. Microsoft’s planning guidance separates readiness across identity infrastructure, device management, applications and resources, and provisioning. Treat each as a workstream with an owner rather than assuming domain policies or access will carry over unchanged. See Microsoft’s Microsoft Entra join deployment plan.
For new devices, Microsoft recommends cloud-native Microsoft Entra join and says it does not recommend deploying new hybrid-joined devices, including through Autopilot. Existing hybrid-joined computers may still need to be managed during a transition; that does not make hybrid join the recommended target for new deployments. The guidance is at Enrollment for Microsoft Entra hybrid joined devices.
Inventory dependencies before choosing a route
Build an inventory at the device level, then group devices by shared technical dependencies and user impact. The following checklist extends Microsoft’s planning categories into practical items to verify in your own environment; the specific dependencies are organization-specific.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Device and user: owner, location, connectivity constraints, Windows support status, current domain and OU, and recovery requirements.
- Identity and management: current join state, existing management enrollment, intended target policies, and whether automatic Intune enrollment is expected.
- Apps and access: critical applications, sign-in methods, certificates, Wi-Fi and VPN access, file shares, and printers.
- Operations: app and policy delivery, security controls, compliance evaluation, support procedures, and how user data will be protected and restored if a device is reprovisioned.
For each dependency, record how it will be tested, who owns the decision, and whether it is a migration blocker or an accepted exception. Microsoft’s planning page calls for assessing apps and resources, but it cannot establish whether a particular organization’s legacy app, policy, share, certificate, or authentication method will work after a device changes state.
Confirm identity and enrollment readiness
Before scheduling a user-driven rollout, confirm that users are allowed to join devices and, if automatic Intune enrollment is part of the design, that the intended users are included in the configured MDM user scope. Microsoft’s user-driven enrollment tutorial describes a workflow involving enrollment configuration, permission to join, device registration, group and profile assignment, and deployment: Set up Windows automatic Intune enrollment.

Keep three operational states distinct: a device can be registered with Windows Autopilot, joined to Microsoft Entra, and enrolled in Intune. Registration makes the device available to the Autopilot service; it does not itself enroll the device in Intune. Intune enrollment occurs as the device goes through the Autopilot process. Microsoft explains registration in Register devices as Windows Autopilot devices. Track these states separately so a registration record is not mistaken for a completed migration.
Choose the provisioning route for each device cohort
Microsoft documents self-service setup, user-driven Autopilot, and bulk enrollment as provisioning approaches. For existing devices that must be reprovisioned, Autopilot for existing devices is a separate path. Compare the documented distinctions before assigning a cohort to a route:

| Route | User interaction and setup | Administrator or data considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Self-service join | Users can join during OOBE or from Settings; Microsoft’s planning comparison says user interaction is required. See the deployment plan and Join Windows 11 devices to Microsoft Entra ID during OOBE. | By default, the joining user becomes a local administrator on that device, according to Microsoft’s planning comparison. Decide whether that meets local policy. The cited guidance does not state an automatic user-data transfer procedure. |
| User-driven Windows Autopilot | A guided OOBE flow can retrieve a profile, prompt for organizational credentials, join the configured directory, enroll in MDM when configured, and apply the Enrollment Status Page experience. See Windows Autopilot user-driven mode. | Plan enrollment configuration, registration, and group and profile assignment before deployment. The cited workflow does not establish automatic preservation of a pre-existing local profile. |
| Bulk enrollment | Microsoft describes this as administrator-driven setup without user interaction during setup. See the deployment plan. | Assess how this approach fits the intended user assignment and management workflow. Local administrator outcomes and user-data handling are not stated for this route in the cited planning comparison. |
| Autopilot for existing devices | Microsoft documents a Configuration Manager task-sequence route that performs a fresh Windows installation and then provisions the device through Autopilot. See Windows Autopilot for existing devices. | Plan backup and restoration separately; the workflow description does not establish automatic preservation of local profiles. This is reimaging, not a demonstrated in-place conversion. |
These routes are not interchangeable shortcuts. Evaluate connectivity, current identity and enrollment state, user impact, app readiness, and your organization’s control of local administrator access before selecting one. Where the Microsoft comparison does not state a behavior, verify it in your environment rather than infer it.
Understand the limits of “conversion” for existing PCs
If the question is “Can I convert an existing domain-joined PC to Entra joined without reimaging?”, the documented existing-device Autopilot route described above does not support that promise: it uses a fresh Windows installation. The cited material does not establish a universal in-place conversion method that preserves every existing profile, setting, or application. Decide whether the device can be rebuilt, and design data backup, restoration, and user communication around that choice.

Also distinguish Autopilot registration from a completed join. Microsoft notes that enabling “Convert all targeted devices to Autopilot” registers targeted devices with the service; that action by itself does not change an existing hybrid-joined device into a Microsoft Entra joined device. A device must go through the relevant provisioning process. See Windows Autopilot for existing devices.

- Record the starting state. Capture each pilot device’s join state, management enrollment, assigned user, and dependencies from the inventory.
- Provision using the selected route. Follow the route’s planned setup and distinguish Autopilot registration from the subsequent join and MDM enrollment.
- Test work users actually need to do. Verify sign-in, critical applications, required resources, policy and app delivery, security controls, and support workflows against the organization’s requirements.
- Record outcomes and unresolved dependencies. Track device identity state, MDM enrollment, user readiness, failures, and exceptions. Assign each issue an owner and remediation decision.
- Expand in cohorts only when ready. Move to the next group after the pilot findings have a remediation plan or an explicit accepted-exception decision, and ensure recovery and user-data procedures are ready for that group.
This is an operating framework, not a Microsoft-prescribed sequence. The goal is to expose environment-specific failures before they affect a larger group.
Set the long-term target for new devices
For net-new Windows devices, align the target with Microsoft’s recommendation for cloud-native Microsoft Entra join rather than creating new hybrid-join deployments. Keep any interim management of existing hybrid-joined computers separate from the design for new devices, and use your dependency register and pilot results to decide how existing cohorts move.
