Choose a NAS for Plex or Jellyfin by first determining whether your devices can direct play your media or whether the server must transcode it. Then check whether the exact NAS model, operating system, and software installation can handle that workload. Storage capacity and drive bays matter for your library, but they do not prove a NAS can transcode.

Start with the playback your NAS must support

Direct play sends a compatible media file to a client without converting its video. Transcoding converts media when the client, connection, or playback settings cannot use the original stream. Plex identifies incompatible content, remote or shared access, and subtitle burn-in as situations that may require transcoding. For Jellyfin, the client reports capabilities and limits such as supported codecs, resolution, and bitrate, and the server selects a suitable output. Plex explains NAS limitations, while Jellyfin documents its transcoding process.

Make a playback inventory

Before comparing NAS devices, list the televisions, streaming boxes, phones, browsers, and remote viewers that will use the library. Note which media formats they support, whether playback will be local or remote, and whether subtitles or bandwidth limits could trigger conversion. This inventory is more useful than assuming that every stream needs transcoding—or that none will.

Estimate the stream workload

Separate expected direct-play streams from streams likely to transcode. Consider how many may run at once, the formats and resolutions involved, and whether remote bitrate constraints apply. Direct play is less demanding on the NAS processor than video transcoding. Plex warns that a NAS may serve files successfully yet lack the processor power for transcoding; as Plex puts it, “By far the biggest limitation with most NAS is processor-based.” Plex NAS Devices and Limitations.

Choose storage separately from processing power

Estimate the library’s usable capacity and expansion needs, then evaluate processing separately. Bay count, disk capacity, and RAID configuration address storage; they do not establish video-transcoding performance. Compare the processor and media engine against the codecs and playback scenarios you identified.

For Jellyfin, the project’s general hardware guide recommends gigabit Ethernet or faster, a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcode cache, and at least 8 GB of memory for an average deployment. These are Jellyfin recommendations, not universal minimums for every NAS or library. The same guide cautions that prebuilt NAS software environments can make third-party applications difficult to install or maintain, sometimes preventing them from working properly. Verify the exact model and software path

For Plex

Search the Plex NAS compatibility guide for the exact model and review its hardware-accelerated streaming support. Plex describes the list as a general guide, not a guarantee for every firmware version, codec, or workload. Confirm that Plex Media Server is available for the NAS’s current software and that the model’s capabilities fit your intended media. Plex notes that some low-power devices, primarily certain ARM-based NAS devices, have transcoding disabled.

Also account for Plex’s feature requirement: hardware-accelerated streaming generally requires an active Plex Pass, subject to device exceptions identified by Plex. Check the current hardware-accelerated streaming requirements before making that feature part of your buying plan.

For Jellyfin

Check both the NAS processor or media engine and whether Jellyfin can be installed and maintained in the device’s operating environment. Jellyfin documents acceleration options including Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Linux VA-API, Apple Video Toolbox, and Rockchip RKMPP, with platform-specific limits. Its hardware-selection guide also warns that low-end CPU families may be problematic. Confirm driver availability and a workable installation route for the exact NAS rather than relying on the name of an acceleration technology alone. Jellyfin’s hardware-acceleration documentation describes supported approaches and limits.

Check the complete transcoding path

A GPU or media-engine label does not mean every part of a transcode will be accelerated. Decoding, scaling, tone mapping, and encoding are separate stages; hardware support can vary by codec, bit depth, driver, operating system, server version, and container configuration. Jellyfin warns that unsupported stages may fall back to software, increasing CPU use or reducing speed. Verify the specific combination of NAS, software, formats, and settings you expect to use. Jellyfin’s acceleration guide explains these partial-acceleration limits.

Include network capacity and remote access

Use a wired network connection for the NAS where practical. Jellyfin recommends gigabit Ethernet or faster and does not recommend Wi-Fi or powerline for the server. For remote access, its guide recommends at least 20 Mbps upload and suggests limiting Jellyfin to 70% of upload speed when total upload is under 100 Mbps. These are Jellyfin recommendations; whether remote playback works smoothly depends on stream bitrate and actual network conditions. Jellyfin’s hardware guide provides the recommendations.

  • Expand the capacity of your QNAP NAS
  • 4 x 3.5-inch SATA 3Gb/s (Diskless)

What to compare What to verify
Media processing Processor generation and hardware codec support for your media; Plex compatibility status; or Jellyfin acceleration method, drivers, and platform limits.
Installation and maintenance Whether Plex or Jellyfin can be installed on the exact NAS software version, and whether you can update and troubleshoot that deployment.
Expected workload Likely direct-play and transcode streams, simultaneous use, local versus remote playback, client limits, and subtitle handling.
Storage Bay count, usable capacity, and expansion path—assessed independently of transcoding ability.
Network Wired link speed and available upload capacity for remote viewers.
Total cost NAS, drives, needed memory or storage upgrades, and—for Plex hardware acceleration—the applicable Plex Pass requirement and cost.

When a simpler NAS may be enough

If your clients can direct play the media you use and your network can deliver it at the required bitrate, a NAS may not need substantial video-transcoding capability. If you expect incompatible formats, subtitle burn-in, constrained remote connections, or several concurrent conversions, treat transcoding support as a core requirement and validate it against the exact workload. In either case, confirm the software can run reliably on the NAS operating system before buying.
