There is no dependable universal monthly price for running a private Playwright or Puppeteer screenshot service. The real bill combines browser compute, networking, storage and delivery, reliability work, and the staff time needed to keep browsers patched and available. To decide whether to keep self-hosting or move to serverless or a managed browser, compare those costs against the same measured workload—not an invented cost-per-screenshot average.
What goes into the cost?
A useful estimate separates cloud charges from the work of operating the service. An open-source browser server may have no software purchase price, but the machines, network, monitoring, and maintenance are not free.
| Cost area | What to measure or include |
|---|---|
| Browser compute | Monthly screenshot volume, measured render duration, memory needs, and peak concurrency. For standard AWS Lambda functions, AWS describes billing by requests and execution duration; the exact estimate also depends on configuration and region. AWS Lambda pricing. |
| Browser session time | Count the full time a session stays open, including navigation, waits, and idle time. Browserless bills browser time in 30-second increments and rounds a partial increment up; a 31-second session uses two units. Browserless documentation. |
| Networking and proxies | Account for VPC connectivity, egress, proxy traffic, and any network architecture charges. AWS notes that VPC use may add charges; Browserless separately meters proxy bandwidth. AWS Lambda pricing and Browserless pricing. |
| Storage and delivery | Estimate image retention, object storage, caching, and delivery costs from your own architecture. The cited pricing pages do not establish a general storage or CDN cost for screenshot services. |
| Monitoring and reliability | Include logs, alerts, queues, retries, incident investigation, and any supporting infrastructure needed to meet your availability and latency goals. |
| Engineering and operations | Count time spent patching browser and operating-system images, sizing hosts, managing concurrency, diagnosing memory growth, tuning queues, and handling failures. Multiply hours by your loaded labor cost. |
| Licensing and paid services | Check the license and deployment terms for your use, especially for a commercial closed-source product, CI, or private deployment. |
A practical estimate is: monthly total = compute + storage + network/proxy + monitoring/queueing + licenses or paid services + engineering hours × loaded hourly cost. This is a calculation framework, not a published industry price. No independent benchmark establishes a typical total cost per screenshot, and the sources do not establish a general number of engineering hours to maintain one.
How to compare the three operating models
| Approach | How the bill works | What your team still needs to own |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted containers or VMs | Compute, storage, networking, monitoring, licensing where applicable, and staff time. Total cost depends on capacity and actual use. | Host sizing, capacity, browser and OS updates, security, monitoring, concurrency, and reliability. This can suit teams that need control over network location, browser configuration, or data boundaries. |
| Standard serverless functions | AWS says standard Lambda functions are priced by requests and execution duration; a real estimate needs observed duration, memory, architecture, region, invocation volume, and networking needs. AWS Lambda pricing. | Validate workload compatibility and measure cold-start behavior in the chosen design; the pricing page does not establish how a particular browser workload will perform. |
| Managed browser service | Plan allowances and usage metering replace some of the infrastructure bill. Check concurrency, session limits, proxy requirements, and the monetary value of any usage units for the plan. | The provider may take on browser-pool operations, resource isolation, and runtime updates, while your team remains responsible for workload design and service-level requirements. Browserless pricing. |
For scale context, AWS’s pricing page gives a Lambda Managed Instances illustration of $0.20 per million requests, a 15% management premium on EC2 on-demand instance pricing, and a $160.36 example total under its stated hypothetical assumptions of 100 million requests and reserved capacity. That is a vendor example for Lambda Managed Instances, not a general Lambda rate or an estimate for screenshot workloads. AWS Lambda pricing.

What usage units mean for browser services
Browserless documents browser time in 30-second units, with partial units rounded up. It also lists proxy bandwidth and successful CAPTCHA solving as additional unit consumers. Its current pricing page lists 6 units per MB for residential proxy traffic, 2 units per MB for datacenter proxy traffic, and 10 units for a successful CAPTCHA solve. These are usage units, not dollar prices; their monetary value depends on the customer’s plan. Proxy and CAPTCHA charges apply only where those features are used. Browserless pricing.
That makes session design relevant to the bill: count time through navigation, waits, and any idle period before the browser closes. Multiple tabs do not, by themselves, multiply Browserless browser-time units, although keeping a session open longer consumes more time. Browserless documentation.

What self-hosting still makes you responsible for
Self-hosting can preserve control over configuration and location, but it does not remove the operational work. Browserless describes Chrome instances leaking memory over time, concurrent sessions competing for CPU and RAM, and self-hosted infrastructure requiring ongoing security patching and capacity planning. These are vendor-described risks, not a measured estimate of how often a particular deployment will encounter them. Browserless documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
Browserless’s open-source Docker image is labeled free and open-source under SSPL-1.0. The company separately lists a commercial license for closed-source products and CI that cannot meet those terms, as well as custom pricing for private deployments and commercial self-hosting. Review the current license and deployment terms for your intended use; “free” describes the image, not the full operating cost. Browserless self-hosting and Browserless pricing.

Build an apples-to-apples estimate
- Measure the workload. Record monthly requests, render-time distribution, session duration, memory use, and peak concurrency—not just the average number of screenshots.
- Define the service level. Specify acceptable queue time and latency, reliability targets, peak-load behavior, and who responds when renders fail.
- Include the full architecture. Add network and proxy traffic, VPC needs, image retention, delivery, monitoring, queues, retries, and any license or paid service.
- Price each option with the same assumptions. Use your observed workload against current provider pricing and your actual infrastructure configuration. For managed plans, convert usage units using the relevant plan; for serverless, use the required invocation and duration inputs.
- Add labor rather than assigning it a value of zero. Estimate recurring maintenance and incident time and multiply it by loaded hourly cost.
- Revisit volatile inputs. Pricing, license terms, and plan allowances can change, so note the date, region, plan, and assumptions behind each estimate.
When each option is a better fit
- Keep self-hosting when control of the browser environment, network location, or data boundary is important and your team can support the operational workload.
- Evaluate serverless when invocation- and duration-based billing fits your traffic pattern, after measuring browser compatibility, execution time, and cold-start behavior in your intended setup.
- Consider a managed browser when reducing responsibility for browser pools, isolation, and runtime updates is worth comparing against metered usage and plan constraints.
- For private or air-gapped needs, compare licensing, infrastructure, compliance, and operating ownership along with price; a private deployment may use custom terms.
There is no evidence here for a universal break-even point or savings percentage. The right comparison is your complete self-hosted cost—including labor—against a serverless or managed option under the same load, concurrency, retention, and reliability assumptions.
