It depends on what is actually bothering you. Keep an old Fire TV Stick if it still runs the apps you use smoothly and remains within its support window. If the complaint is only the home screen, a third-party Home-button workaround may be an option on some Fire OS models—but it is not an Amazon-supported, universal launcher replacement. Replace the Stick when it no longer meets a real app, performance, video, or support need.
Start by identifying the exact model and operating system. Amazon’s redesigned interface is documented for current-generation Fire TV Stick devices, not every older model, and Android-based launcher advice should not be applied to Vega OS devices by assumption.
Which Fire TV Stick do you have?
Model and operating system determine both the device’s support horizon and whether a launcher workaround might apply. Amazon’s Fire OS overview lists the Fire TV Stick 2nd Generation (2016–2019, device code AFTT) as a Fire OS 5 device and the Fire TV Stick 3rd Generation (2020, device code AFTSSS) as Fire OS 7. Amazon says most Fire devices receive over-the-air updates, which may reach devices at different times.
- On the Stick, open Settings > Device > Fire TV > Software Version to check the software version, as documented by Amazon.
- Use Amazon’s device-to-OS reference to match the model and its OS family.
- Check Amazon’s support listing for the exact model and your region before deciding that the device is unsupported.
Amazon’s developer documentation distinguishes Fire OS from Vega OS. For example, it identifies the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) as a Vega OS device. Do not assume that an Android APK or Fire OS launcher tutorial applies to it; Amazon’s Fire TV device comparison provides details on the current lineup.

Is your old Stick still supported?
There is no single support end date for every Fire TV Stick. Amazon’s UK Fire TV software-security page says devices receive security updates for at least four years from purchase new from Amazon as the seller on Amazon.co.uk, or until a later date listed on that page. Its model-specific dates include:

These are dates on Amazon’s UK page, not universal dates for all devices or regions. Check your local Amazon support listing if you bought the device elsewhere. An end date is a support consideration, not a performance benchmark or proof that the Stick will stop working that day.

Will an older Stick get the new Fire TV interface?
Do not assume so. Amazon’s June 22, 2026 announcement says the redesigned interface is available worldwide on current-generation Fire TV Stick devices. It does not establish that every older Stick will receive it. If the home screen is your main frustration, check Amazon’s announcement and your model’s update information rather than replacing a working device solely in expectation of the redesign.
Amazon says Fire TV updates roll out over the air, and rollout timing can vary. A model’s eligibility and the arrival of an update are separate questions: a device can be supported without every new interface being promised for it.

What does “replacing the launcher” mean on Fire TV?
On some Fire OS devices, a third-party utility can redirect the remote’s Home button to a selected launcher. That is not necessarily the same as replacing or uninstalling Amazon’s system launcher. The Home on Fire project maintainer describes support for Fire OS 7 and Fire OS 8 as of May 2026. That is a changeable, maintainer-reported compatibility claim—not an Amazon guarantee for every model, firmware version, or future update.
Consider this route only if you are comfortable with technical setup and the issue is specifically the home-screen experience. Confirm your OS and firmware against the project’s current instructions before proceeding. Configuration may need troubleshooting, and behavior may change after software updates; avoid instructions that disable system components or block security updates.

A September 2026 TechRadar report described a settings bug on some older devices that made the “Install unknown apps” list appear incomplete or empty. Amazon told the outlet it had identified a bug and planned an automatic fix. That report describes a time-specific incident; it does not establish that Amazon ended sideloading on all older Fire OS devices. Check current behavior rather than relying on an old setup guide.

If replacement is justified by a specific limitation, a current Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Generation) is one example to compare. Amazon’s UK support page lists that model through 31 December 2030; check current regional availability and specifications before buying. This example is not evidence that every older Stick needs upgrading.

Make the decision based on the problem, not the age
- Keep the Stick if it still serves your household adequately and remains supported in the applicable regional listing.
- Try a launcher workaround only when the complaint is the home screen and the specific Fire OS model and firmware are compatible with the current third-party instructions.
- Replace it when the device itself cannot meet an important app, performance, video, or support requirement.
The cited sources do not establish a universal age at which replacement is worthwhile or a typical speed improvement from upgrading. Choose based on the limitation you can actually identify.
