No—there is no currently supported general free route to use GPT-4o in ChatGPT. OpenAI retired the model from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, and its API remains available only as a paid service unless an eligible organization receives a conditional token allowance. The familiar “five ways” advice is outdated.
Can I still use GPT-4o for free?
Not through ChatGPT. OpenAI says GPT-4o and other models were retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026, and that “These models will no longer be available for use in ChatGPT.” The retirement applies to ChatGPT access, not to the separate API listing.

OpenAI’s current Free Tier FAQ describes the models and limits offered to free ChatGPT users but does not list GPT-4o. Older instructions telling free users to choose GPT-4o in the model picker no longer apply.
What happened to the five supposed free routes?
There are not five current, generally supported free methods. These are the routes readers are most likely to encounter, with their present status:

Is GPT-4o available in ChatGPT Free?
No. It left ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. The temporary exception for GPT-4o inside Custom GPTs in Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces also ended after April 3, 2026. Neither a free account nor a paid ChatGPT workspace currently provides a supported way to select GPT-4o in ChatGPT.
Can I use GPT-4o through the API for free?
Usually, no. The API is distinct from ChatGPT: GPT-4o is still listed for API use, but its model documentation marks the Free tier unsupported and lists usage-based charges. The listed standard text rates on October 3, 2026, were $2.50 per 1 million input tokens and $10.00 per 1 million output tokens. API costs depend on tokens processed, so check the current model page before sending requests.

Could complimentary tokens cover some API use?
Some organizations may qualify for complimentary daily tokens on traffic shared with OpenAI. This is conditional on the organization’s account, enabled project settings, and the current eligible-model list. It should not be treated as a personal free allowance or assumed to cover every GPT-4o call. Check your organization’s API eligibility and project settings before relying on it.
Why do older guides still say GPT-4o is free?
OpenAI’s May 2024 launch announcement said GPT-4o would be available in ChatGPT’s free tier. That was accurate at the time, but it was superseded by OpenAI’s February 2026 retirement notice. If an old guide says to select GPT-4o from the free ChatGPT model picker, its instructions describe a former policy.

Should you use an unofficial “free GPT-4o” service?
OpenAI’s official materials establish the ChatGPT and API routes described above, not access through independent services. A third-party site advertising free GPT-4o is not equivalent to an official OpenAI route; verify who operates it and how it handles prompts and account credentials before using it. Do not share an OpenAI password or treat an unverified claim as guaranteed model access.
