Telecom Infra Project (TIP) uses DOR for a family of open router roles, including core, provider-edge, aggregation, internet-gateway, and cell-site-gateway devices. Its backbone design uses a spine-and-leaf architecture as an alternative to a single large chassis.
What does DOR mean in telecom networking?
DOR stands for Disaggregated Open Router. In practical terms, it describes a routing architecture in which an operator can select hardware and network software as distinct layers. The separation can allow a network operator to choose or change a network operating system (NOS) without treating the router as a single inseparable hardware-and-software product.
TIP’s current Open Optical & Packet Transport (OOPT) page describes its DOR subgroup as working on open, disaggregated devices for mobile and fixed networks. The subgroup’s specifications address software, hardware, and API requirements. Its stated router roles include core (P), provider edge (PE), aggregation, internet gateway, and cell-site gateway. TIP’s OOPT project page
How does the DOR backbone architecture work?
TIP’s DDBR Technical Requirements Document describes a shift from a monolithic, chassis-based IP backbone to a disaggregated spine-and-leaf design. Rather than scaling only by expanding or replacing one large router chassis, a spine-and-leaf system is built from separate network elements. The applicable TIP requirements describe how those elements and their software fit together.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The related DDBR-PE Technical Requirements Document also discusses separation of control and data planes. The control plane handles routing decisions; the data plane forwards traffic according to those decisions. The intended boundary between components depends on the specific design and requirements, so “disaggregated” alone does not specify exactly which parts are independent in a particular deployment.
What are the intended benefits and trade-offs?
TIP presents the architecture as a way to create more independent paths for hardware and software development. Potential design advantages described in its DDBR-PE requirements include reusing hardware while changing NOS software, combining hardware from different suppliers, and expanding capacity incrementally. These are architectural aims, not proof that every deployment will cost less, be more reliable, or deliver a particular latency.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Disaggregation also means the operator must assess how the selected components work together. When comparing a monolithic chassis with a DOR design, examine which components can be added or replaced independently and what the relevant specification requires for resiliency, management, and automation. The trade-off is therefore not simply “open versus closed”: it also concerns the system boundary, integration responsibilities, and validation for the intended network role.
How do DOR, DDBR, DDBR-PE, and DCSG differ?
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| DOR | The broader Disaggregated Open Router architecture and TIP subgroup covering multiple operator-network router roles. |
| DDBR | TIP’s term in its backbone requirements for a compliant platform intended for IP/MPLS core or edge routing, or internet-gateway use. |
| DDBR-PE | A related set of distributed and disaggregated backbone provider-edge router requirements. |
| DCSG | Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway, a related TIP initiative continued as a workstream under the DOR subgroup. |
These terms are related but not interchangeable: DOR is the broader effort, while DDBR and DDBR-PE refer to specific backbone requirements or workstreams. TIP’s DOR Subgroup Charter, approved by the TIP Board on 17 May 2023, says the subgroup combines DOR and DCSG efforts, retains DCSG and DDBR workstreams, and adds a Disaggregated Aggregation Router workstream.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Is a DOR label proof that a router is compliant?
No. Calling a device “open” or “disaggregated” does not by itself prove that it conforms to a TIP specification or interoperates with other components. TIP’s charter assigns the subgroup work on architectures and technical specifications, evaluation of generally available products against those specifications, and test and validation strategies. For a product or deployment, identify the exact requirement document that applies to its role, then check the product evaluation and test evidence against that document.

No. TIP identifies Cassini as an adjacent open packet/optical transponder rather than a DOR router. Its listed use cases include data-center interconnect, metro, and access-backhaul, so it belongs to a related part of the open transport ecosystem rather than the DOR router category.
