Turning an AI text tool into a product means building more than a prompt box: the application also has to handle server-side AI requests, usage limits, payments, and unreliable output. In his September 26, 2026 DEV Community account, indie developer and student Jerop describes how he approached those decisions while building LexisAi, an AI writing assistant. The implementation details and product status below are Jerop’s account; they have not been independently verified.
From a text transformation to a product
Jerop describes LexisAi’s basic interaction as text and an instruction going in, followed by transformed text coming back. A user might ask it to rewrite or proofread a passage, summarize it, or adjust its tone. That straightforward interaction is the visible feature; the product work is also about how requests are handled, how access is controlled, and what happens when the AI produces an unsupported claim.
Jerop presents LexisAi as a web product he calls live, while also saying its architecture is still being improved. His post is a creator’s account, not an independent evaluation of the app’s current availability or writing quality.
Why keep AI-related logic on the server?
Jerop outlines a request flow that starts in the React interface, passes through an API request to the server, invokes AI generation, and then validates or processes the response before returning a result to the interface. He says API-related logic stays on the server so sensitive credentials are not exposed in the frontend.

- The server handles the AI-related work and processes the generated response.
- The application returns the result to the interface for the user.
This is Jerop’s description of his implementation, not a security audit. The account does not document a repository review or establish that the application is secure in practice. The architectural principle he describes is that the browser should not be the authority for sensitive API credentials.
How the usage limit is meant to work
For the free plan, Jerop gives a limit of “10 successful AI actions / month.” He says a successful generation increments the counter, failed requests should not consume an allowance, and the free allowance resets when a new month begins. He also describes a higher usage limit for Pro, but does not give its amount.

Why payment status should be verified by the server
Jerop says the frontend should not decide whether a user is a Pro subscriber. His described subscription sequence is to initialize payment, let the user complete it, verify the transaction on the server, activate the subscription, and then unlock Pro features.

- Let the user complete the transaction.
- Verify the transaction on the server.
- Activate the subscription and unlock Pro features after verification.
Jerop reports using Paystack and mentions Kenyan currency as well as mobile-money and card payment options. His account does not establish the processor’s current configuration, the current availability of those methods, or LexisAi’s present pricing.
When a fluent answer is still a bad answer
A summarizer can sound convincing while inventing a date, company claim, statistic, or event that was not in the supplied document. Jerop identifies that kind of unsupported output as a product reliability problem. His stated direction is to make LexisAi more grounded and explicit about the information available to it.
That is an engineering concern, not a demonstrated fix: the post reports no benchmark, test protocol, or measured hallucination rate. As Jerop puts it, “An AI feature isn’t finished just because the model produces an answer.”

Jerop lists a broad set of challenges encountered while developing the product: API errors, authentication and payment verification, usage tracking, React issues, caching, service workers, production builds, environment variables, frontend/server boundaries, streaming responses, and preventing unsupported AI claims. The list illustrates how a text-generation feature connects to the rest of a web application, but the account does not provide enough detail to evaluate how each issue was solved.
