The System Management Bus (SMBus) is a two-wire hardware interface that lets system component chips and devices exchange control information. It is based on I²C and is used especially for system and power-management tasks, including communication involving batteries, chargers, sensors, and other components.
What does SMBus stand for?
SMBus stands for System Management Bus. The System Management Interface Forum’s SMBus Specification, version 3.2 (12 January 2022), defines it as “a two-wire interface through which various system component chips and devices can communicate with each other and with the rest of the system.” Read the SMBus specification and release information.
In practical terms, it is a low-level communications interface between hardware components—not a general-purpose internal data bus for moving ordinary computer files or application data. It carries messages that can serve as a control bus for system and power-management functions.
What is the System Management Bus used for?
SMBus was originally intended to link an intelligent battery, its charger, and a microcontroller that communicates with the rest of the system. The specification also describes other possible participants, including power-related devices, system sensors, inventory EEPROMs, and communications devices.

- 512-byte SMBus data buffer with configurable clock speed Device Address 7-bit value is the slave address of the CP2112
- Integrated 194-byte one-time programmable ROM for customizable product information
- Supports HID to SMBus library API for Windows, Mac and Linux for rapid application development
- Applications: portable controllers, USB dongles, data logging
Using messages over a shared bus can replace separate control lines between components. The specification identifies reduced pin count and expandability as benefits: devices can communicate through the interface without requiring a dedicated control line for every signal.
How is SMBus related to I²C?
SMBus is based on I²C operating principles, but the terms do not mean exactly the same thing. The ACPI specification describes SMBus as a two-wire interface based on I²C, while Linux kernel documentation characterizes SMBus as mostly a subset of I²C protocols and signaling. ACPI Specification 6.5 Errata A and the Linux kernel’s Introduction to I2C and SMBus provide those descriptions.

The substantial overlap does not guarantee that every I²C device, controller, or transaction will work with every SMBus implementation. For a specific design or repair, check the requirements of the device and controller, the transaction being used, and the relevant hardware and software support.
What does the SMBus specification cover?
The SMBus specification addresses electrical characteristics, network control conventions, and communication protocols. It places SMBus at the physical, data-link, and network layers of the OSI model; higher-layer functions are outside its scope. That is why SMBus is best understood as a component-level communications and control interface rather than a complete application-level system.
