LaTeX Autofill is a free Obsidian community plugin that lets you find formula structures by typing what they mean—in English or Chinese—inside a math expression, then inserts a template with keyboard-navigable placeholders. It is designed for writers who know the mathematical idea but do not remember the LaTeX command. The project describes it as “IDE-style LaTeX autocomplete for Obsidian.”
What LaTeX Autofill does
LaTeX Autofill provides autocomplete in Obsidian’s math contexts. Its project documentation says you can search by an English name, a Chinese name, or the LaTeX command itself. Unlike completion that depends on starting with a command prefix, its meaning-based mode can surface a formula structure from a word describing the math.
Inside $...$ or $$...$$, the plugin says you can omit the backslash when entering a Chinese word or an English word of at least three letters. This backslash-free mode shows curated entries, rather than matching every word against ordinary formula text. The project states that code blocks and inline code are left alone. Outside math, typing a backslash can trigger completion and wrap inserted content in math delimiters.
The project lists 236 curated entries in 2026, spanning operators, relations, sets, logic, arrows, brackets, fonts, accents, functions, matrices, environments, spacing, probability, and Greek letters. That is the project’s stated inventory, not an independent count. As the project puts it, “The full Completr command list is included for when you do know the name.”

How to install LaTeX Autofill
The project and Obsidian listing specify Obsidian 1.7.2 as the minimum version. The simplest documented installation is through Obsidian’s Community plugins browser:
- Open Settings → Community plugins → Browse.
- Search for LaTeX Autofill.
- Select Install, then enable the plugin.
The project also documents manual installation: download main.js, manifest.json, and styles.css from its repository into .obsidian/plugins/latex-autofill/ in the vault, then enable the plugin. It describes BRAT as a way to install early builds; most users looking for the published plugin can use the Community plugins browser instead.
How to search and insert a formula
Complete by meaning inside math
- Start an inline or display math expression with
$or$$. - Type an English keyword of at least three letters or a Chinese keyword without a backslash, or type a LaTeX command to search by command.
- Choose a suggestion to insert its formula template.
For example, if you remember that you need an integral but not its command, search using the meaning of the structure rather than first recalling the LaTeX prefix. The exact suggestions depend on the plugin’s curated entries.

Trigger completion outside math
Outside a math expression, type a backslash to trigger completion. According to the project, inserted content is wrapped in math delimiters. Its documentation says this behavior does not apply in code blocks or inline code.

Use the dedicated search window
Open the search window from Obsidian’s command palette or the Σ ribbon icon. The project documents these keyboard actions:
- Enter: insert the selected result.
- Shift+Enter: insert it wrapped in
$ $. - Cmd/Ctrl+Enter: copy it.
How template placeholders work
After insertion, the first argument is selected. Press Tab to move forward through placeholders or Shift+Tab to move backward. In matrices and cases structures, the project says each cell is exposed as a placeholder, so you can fill the structure by moving through it rather than selecting each blank manually.

| Question | LaTeX Autofill’s stated approach |
|---|---|
| Can you search by meaning? | Yes. The project says English or Chinese names and keywords can find curated formula structures, including without a backslash in math mode. |
| Does insertion provide a template? | Yes. The project describes full formula templates with placeholders, rather than only inserting a command. |
| Can you navigate placeholders? | Yes. Tab and Shift+Tab move through arguments; matrix and cases cells are placeholders. |
| Does it need a network or AI service? | The developer announcement says it works offline and makes no network or AI calls. |
| Does it complete beyond LaTeX? | Not stated in the project comparison summarized here. |
The project also cautions that LaTeX Suite users may encounter competing Tab behavior in math, and advises against enabling Completr’s LaTeX provider at the same time. If Tab navigation behaves unexpectedly, check for those overlapping plugins and settings.
