In the U.S., recent benchmarks put popular broadband plans at about $69 per month and gigabit plans at about $97 per month. Those are national category averages, not guaranteed offers: the plans available at your address, the speed you need, and fees or discounts determine your actual bill.

What does home internet usually cost per month?

USTelecom’s 2026 Broadband Pricing Index reports 2025 averages of $69.33 per month for its BPI-Speed category and $97.34 per month for its BPI-Gigabit category. For comparison, its corresponding 2024 averages were $69.98 and $97.27. These index figures describe categories of broadband plans; they are not quotes for a plan available at every home. USTelecom’s Broadband Pricing Index explains the index.

There is no single definitive average bill that applies to every household. The Federal Communications Commission’s 2024 Urban Rate Survey reported weighted monthly averages for internet-only packages of $70.35 for DSL, $93.91 for cable, $51.28 for fixed wireless, and $160.34 for fiber. These figures reflect the FCC survey’s method and technology categories, so they should not be combined with the USTelecom index as though all measured the same thing. The FCC also reviewed advertised standalone offers from the ten largest providers, with examples ranging from $30 per month for up to 100 Mbps to $300 per month for about 7 Gbps. Those are examples in a 2024 report, not necessarily current offers or prices available where you live. FCC Communications Marketplace Reports

Why prices differ by address and plan

Availability comes first

Providers do not offer every technology or speed tier at every location. Enter your service address in the FCC National Broadband Map to see provider-reported options and technologies. The map is based on provider submissions; if you believe information about your location is inaccurate, the FCC explains how to challenge it on its availability challenge help page, updated May 15, 2025.

Technology and speed tier affect the price

The FCC’s 2024 Urban Rate Survey averages show that prices vary across DSL, cable, fixed wireless, and fiber. A faster tier can also cost more than a basic plan: USTelecom’s 2025 BPI-Speed average was $69.33 per month, compared with $97.34 for BPI-Gigabit. These are different categories and measurement methods, not a precise price ladder for a particular provider.

Promotions, discounts, and fees change the bill

A low introductory price can rise when its promotion ends. Also check whether the advertised price requires AutoPay, paperless billing, a credit card, or a bundled voice line. The FCC’s 2024 report distinguishes advertised non-promotional prices and notes that most prices it collected included a credit-card or paperless-billing discount. Equipment rental, other monthly charges, one-time fees, and applicable taxes can also affect what you pay.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset

How to compare home internet plans

  1. Check your exact address. Use the FCC National Broadband Map and the providers’ own availability checkers to identify plans you can actually order.
  2. Compare the ongoing price. Record the regular monthly price after any introductory period, plus the length of that period and any discount requirements.
  3. Match performance to your needs. Compare typical download and upload speeds and latency, not just a headline speed. Consider how many people use the connection and what they do online.
  4. Check data and network terms. Review any data allowance, overage policy, and network-management terms; an “unlimited” label does not by itself explain every network policy.
  5. Read contract and cancellation conditions. Check whether there is a term commitment, early-cancellation charge, or other condition for ending service.
  6. Add equipment and other charges. Confirm whether a modem, gateway, router, or mesh extender is included, rented, or sold separately, and look for monthly service fees, installation or activation charges, and taxes where applicable.

Compare the full terms for each available offer rather than choosing by the first advertised monthly number. The FCC’s 2024 price collection also shows why discount qualifications matter: many collected prices included a paperless-billing or credit-card discount.

Do you need to pay extra for a Wi-Fi router?

Not always. Home internet service is the connection to your provider; Wi-Fi is the wireless network inside your home. Depending on the provider and plan, the device that connects your home to the service may be included, rented for a monthly charge, or something you supply yourself. Some providers include additional Wi-Fi equipment in particular plans.

  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.

For example, T-Mobile’s plan page, accessed October 4, 2026, listed a gateway with its 5G Home Internet plans and an included mesh extender with its All-In plan. Check your own provider’s equipment terms before buying a Wi-Fi router or mesh Wi-Fi system. Confirm compatibility and whether the equipment you already have is supported; extra hardware is not necessary for every home and does not automatically reduce the internet bill.
