A force push can replace a shared branch’s visible history and disrupt work built on commits that disappear from that branch. In a new team, the prevention is practical: teach contributors to fetch and integrate remote changes when a push is rejected, coordinate before rewriting a branch others use, and protect important shared branches.

What happens when someone force-pushes a shared branch?

Git normally rejects a push that is not a fast-forward. A fast-forward moves the remote branch pointer ahead while retaining the existing history. The rejection protects the remote branch from losing commits; Git’s push documentation explains this behavior.

A force push bypasses that protection. If a teammate has added a commit since you last updated your local copy, replacing the remote branch pointer can remove that commit from the branch’s visible history. GitHub’s documentation warns that collaborators’ commits can be removed from a branch’s history when someone force-pushes to it (About protected branches).

That does not establish that the commit has been permanently erased from every repository or that a particular incident is recoverable. It does mean teammates may lose the branch state they expected, and work based on the overwritten history can require coordination to reconcile.

What to do when Git rejects a push

Do not respond to a non-fast-forward rejection by immediately adding --force. First learn what changed on the remote, then integrate the histories according to the team’s convention.

  1. Fetch the remote state. For example, run git fetch origin to update your remote-tracking references without changing your current branch.
  2. Inspect the difference. Check your branch and the remote-tracking branch, such as origin/main, to identify commits on each side. Confirm the branch name before proceeding.
  3. Integrate both histories. Merge the remote branch into your branch, or rebase your work on top of it. The choice depends on the project’s history and review conventions. Git’s documentation describes both ways to reconcile concurrent changes; GitLab also documents rebasing and resolving merge conflicts.
  4. Resolve conflicts, test, then push normally. A regular push should succeed when the remote contains the history your branch is based on and no new conflicting update has arrived.

How merge and rebase differ

Approach What it does Best fit Team consideration
Merge Joins the two lines of development while preserving their existing commits. Projects that want the record of parallel work and its integration point. Follow the repository’s merge and review conventions.
Rebase Replays your commits on top of the updated base, creating a linear history. Projects that prefer a linear history and where rewriting the commits being rebased is acceptable. Do not casually rewrite commits already published for others to use; coordinate and follow team policy.

Either approach can preserve both sides’ changes when used correctly. The right choice is a team convention, not a reason to discard remote work.

When a force push is appropriate—and how to reduce its risk

Force-pushing is an intentional history rewrite, not a routine fix for a rejected push. A team may permit it on a feature branch when the branch owner needs to update published commits, but collaborators who have based work on that branch must know what is changing.

  • Confirm the exact branch and remote ref the command will update; avoid broad or ambiguous refspecs.
  • Contact anyone using the branch and agree on timing before rewriting its published history.
  • Fetch and inspect the latest remote state first.
  • When rewriting is approved, prefer --force-with-lease to plain --force. The lease checks that the remote ref is still at the expected value, which can prevent overwriting an update that arrived after your last view of the branch.

A lease is safer, not a blanket guarantee. Git’s manual notes that the ordinary lease form relies on remote-tracking information and can be affected by background fetches. Understand the check and coordinate with collaborators rather than treating the option as permission to rewrite any shared branch. The Git manual’s warning about --force is direct: “It can cause the remote repository to lose commits; use it with care.”

Make safe Git habits part of team onboarding

New environments often bring unfamiliar branch rules, review expectations, and histories. Teams can prevent avoidable lost work by teaching a small set of operational habits before contributors encounter their first rejected push.

  • Show a simple commit graph explaining a fast-forward versus a history rewrite.
  • Teach contributors to fetch and inspect remote changes before resolving a rejected push.
  • Explain when the team expects merge versus rebase, especially for commits already published for review or collaboration.
  • Make branch ownership and coordination expectations explicit: contributors should know which branches are shared and who must be consulted before rewriting them.
  • Where published feature-branch rewrites are allowed, teach lease-protected pushes and their background-fetch caveat.
  • Protect important shared branches and set review or status-check requirements that match repository policy. GitHub says force pushes are blocked by default on protected branches; administrators can configure branch protection to allow them. See GitHub’s protected-branch documentation.

If work appears to have gone missing

Pause before making additional destructive ref changes. Identify the branch’s old and current tips, gather the relevant local and remote history, and follow the repository’s recovery procedure with the team or repository administrator. The right recovery path depends on what refs and copies still exist; no specific incident’s recoverability can be assumed from the fact that a force push occurred.
