To reveal file name extensions in Windows, turn on File name extensions in File Explorer. In Windows 11, choose View > Show > File name extensions. In Windows 10, open the View tab’s folder options and clear Hide extensions for known file types. This changes what File Explorer displays; it does not change a file’s contents or format.
Show file name extensions in Windows 11
- Open File Explorer.
- Select View > Show > File name extensions. Microsoft documents this route for Windows 11 in its Common file name extensions in Windows and File Explorer in Windows guidance.
File Explorer will display extensions at the ends of filenames, such as expenses.xlsx.
Show file name extensions in Windows 10
- Open File Explorer and select the View tab.
- Select Options, then Change folder and search options.
- In the Folder Options window, select the View tab.
- Clear Hide extensions for known file types, then select Apply or OK.
This is Microsoft’s documented Windows 10 route in its File Explorer in Windows guidance. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; these steps describe the setting, not ongoing operating-system support.
What a file extension means
A file extension is the part of a filename after its final period. In expenses.xlsx, for example, .xlsx is the extension. It helps identify the file type and may indicate which applications can open it. An extension does not always point to just one program: Microsoft notes that many extensions are compatible with more than one installed application. Does renaming an extension convert a file?
No. Renaming a file from, for example, report.docx to report.pdf changes its name, not its underlying format. The file may no longer open as expected. To convert a file, use an application or conversion feature that actually saves it in the desired format; do not treat an extension rename as conversion.
