A text hosting site stores text online and gives you a link to share it. People commonly use these services for code snippets, logs, structured data, or long blocks of text that are awkward to send in a chat or email. The key distinction is that a shareable link is not necessarily private: access and discoverability depend on the service’s settings.
What is a text hosting site?
A text hosting site is a web service that stores textual content and makes it available at a web address. You enter or upload text, and the service provides a link that another person can open in a browser. Paste services often preserve line breaks and indentation, and may apply syntax highlighting to make code easier to read. Pastebin.ai’s guide to pastebins describes this common use for plain text, source code, logs, and structured data.
The term is broad. It can mean a pastebin or paste site for snippets and notes, a code-sharing tool such as GitHub Gist, or, more loosely, a service that publishes text as a page. A static website host is related but serves a different purpose: GitHub Pages publishes websites built from HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files in a repository rather than primarily creating a quick link for a text snippet. GitHub’s Pages documentation explains that distinction.
How does a text hosting site work?
- Enter or upload text. This might be a short code sample, a log, or a longer passage where preserving formatting matters.
- Choose available options. Depending on the provider, you may be able to set a title, syntax highlighting, visibility, or an expiration time. Pastebin.ca documents syntax and expiry choices, while Pastebin.com’s API documentation lists optional title, syntax, visibility, and expiration parameters for paste creation.
- Share the generated URL. The recipient opens the link in a browser. Some services also offer a raw-text view or API for creating and retrieving pastes programmatically.
Features and limits differ by service; there is no single standard set of visibility, expiry, or formatting options for all text hosting sites.

Are paste links private?
Not necessarily. “Public,” “unlisted,” “secret,” and “private” are provider-specific labels, so check what each service means before sharing. A public paste may be listed or searchable. An unlisted paste may be omitted from public listings but still readable by anyone who obtains its URL; in that case, the link itself acts like a bearer key.
GitHub makes this distinction explicit for Gists: “Secret gists aren’t private.” Anyone who obtains the URL can see a secret Gist, including someone beyond the intended recipient. See GitHub’s Gist documentation.

Some providers offer additional controls, but their protections should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. For example, pastebin.ca describes secret-key and recipient modes that encrypt text in the browser and store ciphertext, while noting that some metadata may still be observable by the service. Its read-limit option removes a paste from active service access after the selected successful reads; it cannot prevent someone from copying or redistributing the text. These are pastebin.ca-specific features, not a general guarantee about text hosting.

Expiration and deletion limit access through the original service; they do not recall copies already made. A recipient may have copied, downloaded, screenshotted, archived, or redistributed the content. Caches, logs, backups, or third-party systems may also retain residual copies for some time. Treat an expiry timer as a limit on the original link’s availability, not a promise that the text will vanish everywhere. Pastebin.ai’s Editorial Team summarized the distinction in its August 3, 2026 guide: “Expiration limits exposure but does not undo copies.”

When should you use a text hosting site?
- For a quick snippet, log, or long text block: Check that the service preserves formatting and offers the raw view, expiry, and access settings you need.
- For code that needs a history: GitHub Gist supports repository-style features such as commit history and diffs, forking, cloning, downloads, and embedding. A secret Gist remains accessible to people who obtain its URL. Details are in GitHub’s Gist documentation.
- For a complete static website: Use a static site host such as GitHub Pages rather than treating a paste link as a website publishing workflow. See GitHub’s Pages documentation.
- For passwords, private keys, production credentials, or regulated records: Do not put them in a general-purpose paste. Use a dedicated password manager or secrets manager instead.
How to share text more safely
- Remove sensitive details first. Redact credentials, personal information, private keys, and any other data the recipient does not need.
- Share the minimum necessary text. A shorter paste reduces the amount of information exposed if the link is forwarded or discovered.
- Choose access settings for the actual audience. Do not treat “unlisted” or “secret” as equivalent to private unless the provider documents that protection and it meets your needs.
- Check the service’s controls and their limits. Review its visibility, encryption, expiry, read-limit, raw-view, and API options where relevant; provider features can differ.
- Assume recipients can keep a copy. A setting that restricts or later removes access to the original paste cannot prevent copying while it is available.
