Those figures cannot answer whether a hybrid costs more than an EV unless the EV is matched by model year, market, trim, equipment and price basis. A starting MSRP is not the same as a dealer’s advertised price or a buyer’s out-the-door quote, and the comparison can change with local offers and options. The available sources do not provide a matched current EV-sedan transaction price or an aggregate statistic showing how often mid-size hybrids cost more.
What might the price difference pay for?
First identify what each vehicle includes: its powertrain, battery, standard equipment, options and trim. The U.S. Department of Energy’s January 2025 methodology compares EVs with comparable internal-combustion vehicles using current market costs and treats battery and powertrain costs as relevant to the initial purchase-cost question. It does not establish a universal battery surcharge, manufacturer margin or single explanation for any particular model’s price. DOE’s methodology and results are a framework for understanding cost comparisons, not a Camry-versus-EV price survey.

There is also a practical difference in what the vehicles require. A conventional hybrid uses gasoline and does not need routine external charging. A battery EV’s running costs depend in part on access to charging and the price of electricity. EPA fuel-economy labels provide standardized estimates for fuel cost, electric range, charging time and five-year cost comparisons; they are comparison aids, not a forecast of a particular household’s bill. How to make a fair price comparison
Compare vehicles for the same market and purchase period, with similar passenger and cargo needs and equipment. A low-priced hybrid matched against a better-equipped or higher-trim EV will not tell you what the powertrains themselves cost. For each vehicle, record:

- Exact vehicle: model year, trim, drivetrain, options and destination charge.
- Price basis: MSRP, dealer-advertised price or your own out-the-door quote. Do not mix these figures.
- Eligible incentives: subtract only incentives you can actually claim or receive.
- Energy use: estimate gasoline or electricity costs using your annual mileage and local energy prices.
- Charging needs: account for where you can charge, charging time and any home equipment or installation expense. A home Level 2 charger may be useful for some owners, but it does not reduce the vehicle’s purchase price and is not necessary for every EV owner.
- Ownership fit: compare model-specific maintenance assumptions and warranty coverage, plus range, performance, cargo and passenger space, and standard equipment.
EPA label estimates use standardized assumptions, including 15,000 miles per year and projected gasoline prices. Your own driving and local fuel or electricity prices may produce a different result. Use the label to compare models consistently, then adjust the estimate for your circumstances where you can.
Do not assume the federal clean-vehicle credit lowers a 2026 price
For vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, federal new, previously owned and qualified commercial clean-vehicle credits are unavailable, according to the IRS clean-vehicle credit guidance. Do not deduct a former federal purchase credit from a 2026 comparison as if it were generally available. The IRS describes conditions for vehicles acquired on or before the cutoff and placed in service later; anyone in that situation should check the rules and records that apply to their purchase.

What the available data can—and cannot—tell you
The Camry figures establish one manufacturer-listed hybrid example, not a general ranking of mid-size hybrids against EVs. DOE’s incremental-cost work explains a method for comparing EVs with comparable combustion vehicles, while EPA’s labels help compare standardized energy and cost estimates. Neither substitutes for current, matched dealer prices for the two specific vehicles you are considering.
