ISO 3166 country and territory entries beginning with F through M are listed below with their two-letter (alpha-2) and three-letter (alpha-3) codes. ISO also defines a three-digit numeric form. These are identifiers—not telephone calling codes—and an ISO assignment does not determine sovereignty or political recognition.

ISO 3166 codes from F through M

This lookup follows English short-name ordering. It includes territories and other areas as well as sovereign states. ISO notes that its Online Browsing Platform (OBP) is always up to date, so consult it for authoritative current names and assignments: ISO 3166 — Country Codes. RIPE NCC describes its own list as following official English short names in ISO 3166-1 alphabetical order and updating when the maintenance agency changes the official list: RIPE NCC list of country codes.

What the code formats mean

ISO 3166 defines internationally recognized codes for referring to countries and their subdivisions; it does not define country names. ISO says names come from United Nations sources. The standard has three parts: current country names, subdivisions, and formerly used country names.

Format Length Role
Alpha-2 Two letters ISO recommends this form for general-purpose use.
Alpha-3 Three letters More closely associated with a country name.
Numeric-3 Three digits Can be useful where Latin script should be avoided.

Examples: France is FR (alpha-2) and FRA (alpha-3); FK is the alpha-2 code for the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). A code’s letters should not be assumed to match a familiar abbreviation or the first letters of a name.

How to use these codes correctly

  • Check which representation a form, database, or software interface requires; the three forms are not interchangeable in every system.
  • Confirm the receiving system’s accepted set of countries and territories. Applications may implement a subset or maintain their own naming conventions.
  • Use the maintained ISO OBP when accuracy matters, because names and assignments can change.
  • Do not substitute an ISO code for a telephone calling code. “Calling code” refers to a different numbering system.

ISO country codes are used in contexts including postal exchange, internet domains, machine-readable passports, banking, logistics, telecommunications, travel, and medical information. Their use in one system does not guarantee that another system expects the same format.

Names that may not appear where expected

Côte d’Ivoire, sometimes called Ivory Coast in English, is alphabetized under C in ISO’s English short-name ordering, not under I. Its alpha-2 code is CI and its alpha-3 code is CIV. It is therefore not part of the F–M alphabetical entries above.

Some listed entries are territories or other areas rather than sovereign states. ISO explains that some entries remain for historical reasons even though they do not meet its current definition of a country. An assignment in ISO 3166-1 is a coding designation, not a ruling on political status.
