White box networking separates network hardware from the network operating system (NOS) that runs it. For switches, that usually means choosing a platform built around merchant silicon and selecting compatible software separately—creating supplier choice while making the operator responsible for validating and supporting the combination.

What does white box networking mean?

A white box switch is network hardware that is not tied to a single, inseparable vendor-supplied operating system. The hardware and NOS can be sourced separately, so an operator can select a supported software platform for the switch rather than being limited to the system preinstalled by its hardware supplier. The Open Compute Project (OCP) describes white-box hardware as commoditized equipment built on merchant silicon to a specification for a set of needs: OCP white paper on open networking.

In this context, “white box,” “bare metal switch,” and “open network switch” are often used for related products, but packaging and support arrangements vary. “Open networking” is broader: it can refer to separately supplied hardware, NOS, and management tools connected through open interfaces. “Network disaggregation” describes separating components that were previously sold as one integrated product.

These terms describe an architecture, not a guarantee that every component is open source or interchangeable. A NOS must support the specific switch platform, and features and behavior can differ by platform and software release.

How does a white box switch work?

A switch forwards traffic through a hardware-and-software stack. The relevant pieces must work together; choosing a switch and NOS independently does not remove the dependencies between them.

  1. Merchant silicon: The switching ASIC performs packet forwarding. Its capabilities constrain supported port speeds, capacity, tables, and buffers.
  2. Switch platform: A hardware manufacturer builds the switch around an ASIC, adding ports and a management subsystem. Platform details determine what the NOS can detect and control.
  3. Network operating system: The NOS supplies switching and routing functions, configuration, automation interfaces, and telemetry. It must support the hardware and the features the operator needs.
  4. Installation and operation: On supported hardware, ONIE provides an environment for installing a NOS. ONIE is an installer, not the production network operating system. See the ONIE documentation.

Open-source projects illustrate some of the software choices. ONF’s Stratum, for example, is a switch software approach that exposes interfaces including P4Runtime and OpenConfig. Those interfaces support particular forms of programmable forwarding, configuration, or telemetry; they do not make every device implement the same features. See ONF’s Stratum project.

What changes—and what remains the operator’s responsibility?

Separating hardware and software can broaden supplier choice, allow hardware to be reused, and let hardware and NOS refreshes follow separate schedules. These are potential architectural benefits, not assured savings or outcomes. The operator may also take on coordination that an integrated supplier would otherwise handle.

  • Compatibility: Confirm the exact hardware platform, NOS release, firmware, optics, and required features are supported together.
  • Validation: Decide who tests the complete combination and how changes to software, firmware, or optics are qualified.
  • Lifecycle: Establish upgrade, rollback, and hardware replacement procedures across components with separate release schedules.
  • Support: Identify who owns an incident when the fault could involve the ASIC, switch platform, NOS, firmware, or optic—and how the vendors will coordinate escalation.
  • Operations and cost: Compare automation and interface coverage, plus integration and ongoing operations, rather than looking only at hardware or software acquisition costs.

OCP discusses operational challenges in disaggregated ecosystems in its open networking white paper. Vendor guidance also stresses testing the specific hardware, software, and optic combination and accounting for integration and support. There is no universal cost winner established for white box versus integrated switching.

How is white box networking different from an integrated switch?

An integrated switch is typically sold as a more unified hardware-and-software product, while a white-box approach makes it possible to source those elements separately. The distinction is about sourcing and responsibility; it does not by itself determine performance, reliability, or total cost.

Decision factor White-box approach Integrated switch
Hardware and NOS sourcing Can be selected separately, subject to platform support. Typically supplied as a unified product; exact arrangements vary.
Compatibility and features Operator must verify platform, NOS release, firmware, optics, and feature support. Confirm the vendor’s supported configuration and feature set.
Validation and support Responsibility may be split among suppliers; clarify who validates and coordinates escalation. May offer a more centralized support path; confirm contract scope.
Lifecycle and automation Plan for coordination across separate update schedules and check interface coverage. Assess the vendor’s update process and automation interfaces.
Total cost Include qualification, integration, and ongoing operations. Include the complete product and support arrangement.

Does “open” mean everything works with everything?

No. ONIE enables installation choice on supported switches, but it does not prove universal NOS compatibility. OpenConfig and P4Runtime can reduce some proprietary barriers for specific configuration, telemetry, or forwarding tasks, but standards do not guarantee identical feature coverage or behavior across implementations. Treat compatibility as a documented, release-specific fact to verify—not an assumption based on the word “open.”

Does white box also apply to optical transport?

Yes. White-box and disaggregation ideas also appear in optical transport, where components from multiple suppliers may be combined. In the architecture described by ONF’s ODTN project, each optical link uses a matched pair of transponders from one vendor, while different links and open line systems may use equipment from other vendors. This is not a claim that any transponder will interoperate freely with any other. See ONF’s ODTN project.
