An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a system that uses converters, switches and stored energy—usually a battery—to keep connected equipment powered when its normal input supply fails. It provides a short-term bridge through an interruption, giving equipment time to keep running briefly or shut down safely. Depending on its design, a UPS may also regulate voltage or condition power, but backup time and protection features vary by model.

What an uninterruptible power supply does

A UPS sits between a power source and connected equipment. When input power fails or falls outside the unit’s operating range, stored energy supplies the load. The U.S. Department of Energy reproduces the regulatory definition as a system of “convertors, switches and energy storage devices (such as batteries)” that maintains continuity of load power during input failure: DOE’s UPS overview.

In practical terms, a UPS can help a computer, router or network device ride through a brief outage, or give a user time to save work and shut equipment down safely. It is not, by itself, a generator or a promise of hours of operation. Runtime depends on the UPS’s battery and the power drawn by the connected load.

How UPS types differ

Topology describes how power flows through a UPS during normal operation and what changes when the input supply has a problem. The common categories are standby, line-interactive and online double-conversion.

Topology During normal input When input has a problem Typical use described by manufacturers
Standby (offline) Utility power normally passes through the unit. The unit switches the load to battery after detecting a problem. Basic home or small-office loads, desktop computers and networks.
Line-interactive Power passes through voltage-regulation circuitry. The unit can correct some high or low voltage without using the battery; the battery takes over when input is outside its operating range. Workstations and office networks where voltage fluctuates but utility power is otherwise relatively clean.
Online double-conversion Incoming AC is converted to DC and then back to AC; the inverter supplies the load. The inverter already supplies the load, so Eaton describes zero transfer time to battery. Sensitive or mission-critical equipment, including server rooms and data centers, or locations with unreliable power.

These are general topology descriptions, not guarantees about every product in a category. Regulation range, output waveform, transfer behavior, efficiency and runtime are model-specific; check the unit’s specification sheet. Eaton explains the three power-flow designs in its UPS systems comparison.

How to choose a UPS for your equipment

1. Add up the load you need to keep powered

List the devices that must remain on and determine their power requirements in watts and volt-amperes (VA). Size the UPS for the actual connected load, allowing suitable capacity for planned growth. Do not assume that a unit’s VA rating alone tells you how many devices it can support at their full power draw.

2. Decide how much runtime you need

Be specific about the goal: bridging a brief interruption, keeping network access alive, or allowing a safe shutdown. Runtime varies with load and battery capacity. Use the manufacturer’s runtime chart or calculator for the exact model and load rather than relying on a generic estimate. Eaton and Vertiv both identify load and battery capacity as selection factors: see Eaton’s UPS fundamentals and Vertiv’s UPS selection guide.

3. Match power conditioning to the need

For a straightforward backup need, standby may be sufficient. Line-interactive adds voltage regulation, while online double-conversion continuously converts power for the load and is used for more sensitive or critical equipment. More conditioning is not automatically better for every user: the U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) says higher levels of conditioning generally reduce UPS system efficiency. Choose the protection level the application requires.

4. Check the installation and expansion requirements

  • Confirm the input and outlet requirements, as well as the number and type of outlets available for your equipment.
  • Check whether the installation needs single-phase or three-phase power. Vertiv describes single-phase power as common in household and light-commercial applications, and three-phase power as used in larger, power-hungry facilities.
  • Choose a tower or rack form factor that fits the available space, with the ventilation the unit requires.
  • Consider whether you need redundancy or additional capacity as the load grows.

FEMP’s UPS purchasing guidance recommends considering equipment type, capacity and count, conditioning level, redundancy and required outage uptime. Its guidance has a defined product scope and should not be assumed to cover every industrial, mobile or embedded UPS application.

UPS backup versus a generator

A UPS is usually the immediate bridge when power is interrupted. A generator or another backup source can supply power for a longer outage, and may be paired with a UPS so equipment has continuity while the longer-term source starts or is brought online. Whether a particular arrangement will support a given load for a given time depends on its equipment and configuration; there is no universal UPS runtime.

Efficiency, maintenance and U.S. standards

Efficiency depends on the product and operating conditions

FEMP’s December 2024 guidance distinguishes VFD (voltage and frequency dependent), VI (voltage independent) and VFI (voltage and frequency independent) systems by conditioning level: VFD offers the most basic conditioning, VFI the highest, and VI falls between. The guidance’s example for a 900-watt voltage-independent UPS estimates $36 in lifetime energy-cost savings for an ENERGY STAR-level model versus its less-efficient comparison model, assuming a six-year life and the stated electricity-price and discount assumptions. That is a scenario, not a general savings guarantee. The same example reports average efficiencies of 99.3% for its best-available model, 98.4% for its ENERGY STAR example and 97.3% for the less-efficient example; those figures do not describe the whole UPS market.

Follow product-specific maintenance instructions

Battery and capacitor maintenance requirements vary. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for checks and replacement parts, and confirm that any replacement battery is compatible with the exact UPS model. FEMP also advises considering efficiency across the expected loading range, rather than looking only at a single operating point.

U.S. regulatory context

For UPS products covered by the U.S. conservation standard, DOE points to requirements in 10 CFR 430.32(z)(3) and test methods in 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Appendix Y. DOE lists the UPS test-procedure final rule as published April 19, 2024, effective July 3, 2024, with amendments mandatory for product testing beginning October 16, 2024. These are U.S. regulatory details; consult the linked DOE page and current regulations for compliance decisions.
