A reseller wallet balance is best understood as a view calculated from recorded financial movements—not as the complete record of the money. The ledger explains why the number changed; the displayed balance makes that history easier to use. For a wallet to be trustworthy, its totals should be reproducible from its postings and reconciled against them.
What a reseller wallet balance represents
Modern Treasury defines a ledger account as “a programmatically tracked balance in a double-entry system.” An account can represent a user’s digital wallet, a counterparty receivable, operating cash, or loan principal. In this model, a wallet balance is a view of account activity, while the entries underneath provide the explanation for that view. Modern Treasury’s Ledger Accounts Overview describes its account model.
A single mutable wallet.balance value can be convenient to display, but on its own it cannot show whether the amount came from a deposit, purchase, commission, refund, or correction. The underlying movements need to remain identifiable, and the displayed total should be reproducible from the accepted postings. The reseller-specific examples and recommendations below are design guidance from the article matching this title, not verified details of a particular reseller platform.
Why the balance changed: follow the events
Consider an illustrative sequence from the reseller article: a reseller adds $100, spends $30 on a purchase, and receives a $3 commission. The resulting posted balance is $73. If the purchase is fully refunded and the commission is reversed, the example returns to $100. These amounts are examples, not industry statistics.

The useful lesson is that each business event needs an explainable ledger effect. A funding movement has an origin; a purchase sends value somewhere; a commission has a defined basis; and a refund or correction refers back to the movement it changes. Balanced postings can help check that a transaction is complete, but balance alone does not prove that the transaction was authorized or correct.
Keep counterpart accounts visible
Double-entry accounting records the other side of a movement rather than treating a wallet as an isolated pot. Modern Treasury’s Digital Wallet tutorial, for example, shows deposits increasing cash and user-wallet accounts; transfers decreasing the sender’s account and increasing the recipient’s; and withdrawals reducing the user account and cash account while recording any fee as revenue. User balance accounts represent funds the platform owes others, while cash accounts support financial reporting and bank reconciliation.

Posted, pending, and available are different balances
The word “balance” is ambiguous unless the product says what it means. Modern Treasury documents these views, with account normality affecting the precise calculation:
| Balance view | What it means |
|---|---|
| Posted | Settled entries. |
| Pending | Posted balance plus pending entries, including movements expected to settle in or out. |
| Available | Funds considered safely usable: expected outgoing movements reduce the amount, while expected incoming funds are not counted as usable yet. |
These definitions come from Modern Treasury’s account documentation; they are not a universal formula for every wallet. Its transaction-status documentation distinguishes pending, posted, and archived transactions. In that product, pending transactions are mutable, while posted or archived transactions and entries are immutable. Other implementations may use different rules.

A reseller product should make clear which amount appears on screen and which amount is used to authorize a purchase. It should also state which event statuses affect each amount and whether holds or reservations reduce spendable funds. That is why an available balance can be lower than a displayed total: some value may be reserved, or an expected incoming movement may not yet count as spendable.
Prevent two purchases from spending the same funds
A ledger records movements, but it does not by itself prevent two simultaneous orders from reading the same apparent available amount and both proceeding. The title-matching article proposes using a stable wallet row as a serialization point, then reading the balance and active reservations inside a database transaction. Treat this as a practical design suggestion, not a universally tested or performance-guaranteed protocol; the appropriate implementation depends on the system’s database and reservation policy.

Whatever the implementation, the authorization decision must account for competing spend attempts and active reservations. A wallet display can be accurate when read and still be insufficient to authorize a later purchase if another order has already claimed those funds.

Make retries idempotent
Payment or order notifications can be delivered more than once. The reseller article recommends assigning an operation key to the business effect—for example, the purchase event—rather than to one HTTP delivery. A repeated delivery should return the existing result instead of posting a second charge. It also recommends rejecting a reused key if the amount, currency, or source differs, since uniqueness by itself does not identify a mismatched retry. These are design recommendations, not a claim about a particular API standard.

Reverse settled activity with a traceable event
Record refunds and corrections as new, traceable movements linked to the original activity instead of silently editing a settled amount. In Modern Treasury’s documented model, posted entries are immutable and their effect is undone with a second reversing transaction. Other systems may implement different rules, but preserving the relationship between original and corrective events lets an operator explain where a revised balance came from.
Reconcile the projection against postings and cash
A cached or precomputed total can make a wallet screen faster, but it should be checked against the underlying entries. The reseller article recommends looking for unbalanced entries, differences between cached and recomputed totals, unmatched funding, over-refunded orders, and reservations consumed without a corresponding charge. It does not prescribe a universally correct reconciliation frequency.
Reconciliation should also distinguish wallet liabilities from cash or settlement assets. A platform may owe users the amounts represented in their wallet accounts, while its bank or settlement accounts track assets held to meet those obligations. Comparing aggregate user balances with relevant cash records helps identify discrepancies; a wallet screen alone does not prove that bank cash, supplier funds, or custody balances match the customer-facing total. Modern Treasury illustrates this account separation in its Digital Wallet tutorial.
Questions to ask when evaluating a wallet design
- Which transaction statuses feed the reseller-facing balance, and which amount authorizes spending?
- Do holds and reservations reduce the amount shown as available?
- How are simultaneous purchases prevented from claiming the same funds?
- How are duplicate notifications recognized, and how are mismatched retries rejected?
- Can refunds and commissions be traced to the movements they reverse or correct?
- Are cached totals checked against postings and relevant cash or supplier records?
The European Commission Joint Research Centre describes a transaction ledger more broadly as a history of incoming and outgoing activity that maintains an updated wallet balance. That general description supports the distinction between activity history and its resulting total, but it does not establish how any particular reseller platform implements its wallet.
