Chromis POS is described by its project as free, open-source point-of-sale software licensed under GNU GPL version 3. Its documentation outlines a setup covering Java, database and payment configuration, users, taxes, products, barcodes, and receipt design. The project calls it “commercial-grade,” but that is the project’s characterization—not an independent certification or performance assessment.

Is Chromis POS free, and can it be used commercially?

The Chromis POS README says: “Chromis POS Point Of Sale is open source and free software licensed to you under the GNU GPL 3 license.” The project also says use “is not restricted in any way.” These are statements from the project README; review the license text and the terms applicable to your own deployment if you need legal guidance.

The project describes Chromis as suitable for use from one countertop machine to multiple terminals in different locations. That is a project claim, not independent evidence of performance at a particular store size. Its phrase “commercial-grade quality product” should likewise be read as the project’s description, not a third-party certification.

What to check before choosing Chromis POS

Free software does not by itself establish the total cost or suitability of a live retail setup. Evaluate the practical requirements for your store alongside the license.

  • Deployment: Decide whether you need one terminal or multiple terminals, and establish how the database will be configured and backed up.
  • Devices: Check compatibility for the exact receipt printer, barcode scanner, cash drawer, and payment hardware you plan to use.
  • Store workflows: Confirm that the product, inventory, tax, and sales-screen configuration fits your operation.
  • Support and upkeep: Check the chosen distribution’s release notes, maintenance information, and available support before relying on it in a live store.
  • Payments and compliance: Verify processor availability and local tax requirements independently. Generic payment-gateway configuration does not establish that a provider is currently supported, certified, or available in your country.

The available project listings do not establish a current official maintenance policy, release status, or support-response commitment. A separate community fork refers to version 0.56.2 and advises testing updates and backing up the database; that guidance is specific to that fork and build, not evidence of the current official release. See the ChromisPos repository listing and the community fork documentation for the relevant project materials.

How to set up Chromis POS

The project README describes a sequence from preparing the runtime through configuring store data and receipts. Exact screens and labels can vary by build, so use the instructions packaged with the version you install.

  1. Confirm the build and runtime: Choose the Chromis distribution you intend to install, then check its documentation for operating-system and architecture requirements. A separate Chromis download README identifies Java 11 as a requirement; confirm that applies to your exact package before installation. See the Chromis POS download README.
  2. Install the appropriate Java runtime: The project README recommends installing a runtime suited to your operating system and architecture before launching the application.
  3. Configure the database and payment settings: Complete the application’s database configuration and any payment-gateway settings your deployment requires. Do not infer current processor support or certification from the presence of gateway configuration alone.
  4. Set up users and roles: Create the users and assign roles appropriate to your store’s operating practices.
  5. Configure taxes, categories, and products: Enter tax rates, product categories, and product records. The README specifically warns not to delete the default category, product, and two default tax records; it says they may be renamed.
  6. Add barcode and sales-screen details: Enter product barcode data and configure the sales-screen buttons and images as needed.
  7. Design the receipt ticket: Configure the receipt-ticket template and prepare the receipt layout and logo for printing.
  8. Back up after configuration: The README recommends taking a backup after the initial setup. Establish a backup routine appropriate to your database and store operations.

Receipt printers, barcode scanners, and other hardware

Chromis documentation discusses product barcodes, receipt-ticket configuration, and support for a variety of hardware, so receipt printers and barcode scanners are relevant device categories to investigate. The available documentation does not provide a verified model-by-model compatibility list or confirm a particular printer or scanner model.

If purchasing equipment, look for a thermal receipt printer for POS or a barcode scanner for POS as a category, not as a guarantee that a specific product will work. Before buying, verify the model, connection type, operating-system and runtime requirements, and setup instructions for the exact Chromis build you plan to use. Apply the same checks to cash drawers and payment hardware.

What remains to verify for a live store

Documentation available for Chromis does not establish current payment-provider availability, jurisdiction-specific tax compliance, a complete hardware compatibility matrix, or official support commitments. Confirm those points with the documentation for your chosen distribution, device makers, and relevant payment and tax providers before deployment. If you need a comparison with another POS product, assess both options against the same needs: license and operating costs, runtime and operating-system support, terminal setup, database and backup duties, hardware compatibility, store workflows, and current maintenance information.
