Community developers have made Adobe Photoshop installers run on Linux through patched Wine, and a current project reports a limited Photoshop 27.10 workflow that edits an image, saves and reopens a PSD, and exports a PNG. That is a real compatibility milestone, not an official Linux release: the project is experimental, reports unresolved problems, and has only documented results from one AMD laptop.
What changed: from installer fixes to a limited editing workflow
The first reported milestone came in January 2026. Developer PhialsBasement worked on Wine compatibility issues involving MSHTML and MSXML3, components that had been blocking Creative Cloud installer flows. Phoronix and Linuxiac reported that Photoshop 2021 and 2025 were installing with the patched build. Those were developer-reported results covered by contemporaneous reporting, not an Adobe announcement or independent compatibility certification.
A separate, more extensive effort, Adobe for Linux, has since documented steps beyond installation. Its experimental v0.1.0 prerelease combines patched Wine with setup and launcher tools. The project maintainer says the tools do not include Adobe binaries or activation bypasses; users need their own Adobe account and entitlement. The README also states: “It is not an Adobe-supported Linux port or complete Windows parity.”
In the project’s current README, a fresh Ubuntu userspace reached personal-account sign-in, downloaded an entitled Photoshop 27.10 installation, edited an image, saved and reopened a PSD, and exported a matching PNG. That is evidence of a constrained end-to-end workflow—not proof that every installation, document, or Linux desktop will behave the same way.

What the project has actually tested
The project’s September 2026 progress report and its current README describe different runs and versions. They are useful evidence of progress, but they are project-reported tests rather than independent benchmarks.

The README says all recorded results come from one AMD laptop. It describes a 16 GB machine with substantial swap; that is a test-machine description, not a universal minimum or a recommended specification. The project says larger documents benefit from more memory, but results on other GPUs and Linux distributions have not been qualified.

Does Photoshop work on Linux?
In a qualified sense: some Photoshop workflows have been demonstrated on Linux using patched Wine. The documented 27.10 run is more than an installer screenshot because it includes editing and a file round trip. But “works” should not be read as “reliable for everyday production.” The project itself reports launch, helper, rendering, and shutdown problems, and the evidence does not establish compatibility across hardware or distributions.
Installation, account sign-in, application startup, GPU rendering, editing, saving, reopening, exporting, updates, plug-ins, and interaction with the desktop session are separate compatibility questions. Success at one stage does not establish success at the next. In January, the developer described Photoshop 2021 as running smoothly but mentioned drag-and-drop trouble that might be related to the developer’s Wayland setup; that was an individual report quoted by Phoronix, not a general test result.

Can I install Photoshop on Linux with Wine?
There is a community-maintained route, but it is experimental rather than an Adobe-supported installation method. Adobe for Linux provides patched-Wine setup and launcher tools; the project requires users to supply their own Adobe account and entitlement. It does not supply Photoshop or provide an activation bypass.
Before relying on it, check the project’s current instructions and known issues for the exact Linux distribution, desktop session, GPU, and Photoshop version you intend to use. Test the tasks that matter to you with copies of real files: sign-in, opening and editing, saving and reopening, exporting, and any required plug-ins or input-device workflows. Keep working copies and backups outside the test installation. The project’s documented results do not establish that updates, large documents, plug-ins, or other hardware configurations will work.

Can Photoshop 2025 run on Linux?
January 2026 reporting described Photoshop 2025 as installing with PhialsBasement’s patched Wine work. That claim concerned installer compatibility; it does not establish that Photoshop 2025 has the same editing and save/reopen evidence now documented for the separate project’s Photoshop 27.10 run. Treat the exact version and workflow as important: one version’s installer success is not a guarantee for another version or for full use.

Adobe’s supported-version guidance, updated September 28, 2026, lists Photoshop 27.x as the current release and 26.x as the prior release. Under that policy, both receive technical support and security fixes; bug fixes are listed for current 27.x, not the older 26.x release. Adobe’s desktop technical-requirements page lists Windows and macOS and has no Linux entry. That page does not identify Wine as a supported environment, so users should not assume Adobe will troubleshoot Wine-specific problems.
