KDE Frameworks 6.17.0 is a developer-focused maintenance release, announced on 8 August 2025. Its changes are spread across individual libraries: examples include Qt compatibility work, fixes for specific bugs, and updates to developer APIs. It is not a major KDE Plasma redesign, and it is no longer the latest Frameworks release: KDE’s announcements index lists 6.30.0, announced on 9 September 2026.
What is KDE Frameworks 6.17.0?
KDE Frameworks is a collection of add-on libraries used by applications built with Qt, rather than a desktop environment version. KDE describes the collection as 83 libraries, with a tiered dependency structure and support across Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android. The libraries use LGPL or MIT licenses. KDE Developer Documentation’s project overview provides this collection-level context.
KDE announced Frameworks 6.17.0 on Friday, 8 August 2025, as one of its planned monthly releases. The stated aim of that schedule is to make improvements available to developers predictably. The release notes are organized by library, so the most accurate way to understand this version is as a broad set of component-level maintenance changes, not as one headline feature.

KCoreAddons fixes Windows and localization issues
KCoreAddons fixes a crash or stack overflow that could occur when removing a drive on Windows. It also fixes reading localized JSON values on Windows and macOS.
KJobWidgets updates a job-tracker API preference
KJobWidgets deprecates KUiServerJobTracker in favor of KUiServerV2JobTracker. This is relevant to developers maintaining applications that use the older tracker; it is an API transition, not a change to a desktop-wide user setting.

KService adds service-dump functionality
KService adds a mode to the findservice utility for dumping all services. Its notes also describe changed symlink handling, including for distributions such as NixOS.
Qt and Frameworks deprecation cleanup
Several modules report that they compile without deprecated methods from Qt 6.10. Multiple modules also update disabled-deprecation versions so they can compile without methods deprecated in KDE Frameworks 6.16. This is compatibility and maintenance work for developers building the libraries and dependent software; it should not be read as evidence of a general performance improvement.

Who is likely to notice these changes?
Most of the release’s details matter to application developers, packagers, and people building or maintaining Frameworks components. For example, the KJobWidgets change may require attention from code using the deprecated job tracker, while ECM’s CMake adjustment concerns build configuration. The KCoreAddons fixes address particular platform-specific problems.
For end users, the impact depends on whether their distribution ships Frameworks 6.17.0 and whether an application they use incorporates the affected libraries. KDE’s changelog does not present this version as a wholesale change to Plasma’s interface or behavior.

Is KDE Frameworks 6.17.0 the latest version?
No. Frameworks 6.17.0 is a historical release, announced on 8 August 2025. KDE’s rolling Frameworks announcements index lists version 6.30.0, announced on 9 September 2026. A distribution may package a different version according to its own release policy, so the version installed locally can differ from KDE’s newest announcement.
How to get Frameworks 6.17.0
KDE’s release announcement says Frameworks 6.17.0 requires Qt 6.5.0. For Linux users, KDE recommends obtaining binary packages through the distribution. The announcement does not set a universal date for when each distribution will provide this version; check your distribution’s package manager or package information for the version it actually offers.
Source compilation is another route. KDE describes basic CMake, Make, and install commands for building a single Tier 1 framework, and recommends kdesrc-build for contributors or people tracking the full set of Frameworks. Building from source is therefore an option for development or specific needs, not a required step for every user.
KDE’s versioned Frameworks 6.17.0 information page corroborates the source archive and identifies Nicolas Fella as its signer.
