Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallNavidrome 0.55.0 is the project’s “Big Refactor”: it substantially changes music metadata handling, track and album identification, and library scanning. New installations can use its expanded tagging and grouping features immediately. Existing users should first back up their database and decide whether to keep the new album grouping defaults—because artist favorites and ratings are lost during the upgrade, and albums may be organized differently afterward.
What Navidrome 0.55.0 changes
Navidrome’s official v0.55.0 release notes describe substantial improvements to file management and metadata. The release is more than a visual refresh: it changes metadata extraction, scanner behavior, configuration, and the database schema.
Richer music metadata
Tracks and albums can now be associated with multiple artists, and the metadata model represents contributor and performer roles. The ALBUMVERSION tag can distinguish editions such as a remaster or deluxe release. More flexible multi-valued tags and custom tags are also supported, and the added metadata can be used in Smart Playlists.
Persistent IDs and album grouping
Tracks and albums receive persistent IDs (PIDs), intended to keep references stable when files are moved or renamed. Album grouping is configurable through PID.Album; for example, PID.Album="folder" groups albums by folder. The default disambiguation logic changed in 0.55.0, however, so the same library may be grouped differently after upgrading.

Scanner improvements
The scanner adds watcher mode for near-real-time library updates and resumable scans, with improved handling of moved, retagged, or missing files. These changes are intended to make library maintenance more capable; they do not eliminate the full scan triggered by the upgrade.
Should you upgrade? First check what you could lose or change
The release notes explicitly warn that artist favorites and artist ratings are lost when upgrading to 0.55.0. They also warn that albums may be grouped differently under the new defaults. These risks matter most to established libraries with curated artist data or album organization.

- More Cost-effective Storage Solution: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, A UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $629.99 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $1,439.76 for 2 years, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $7,198.80 for 10 years. You will save $6,568.81 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH4300 Plus + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Your Data, You Control:No third-party clouds, no hidden access, UGREEN NAS provides a more secure and private data storage solution. It stores data locally on your private hard drives and does automatic backups. Thus, you can keep full control over it. The advanced encryption is TRUSTe certified in the United States and is awarded the first (and only) ETSI EN 303 645 certification mark for NAS products by TÜV SÜD Group.
Keep the legacy album grouping
If you need the old grouping behavior, set PID.Album="album_legacy" before upgrading. The equivalent environment variable is ND_PID_ALBUM=album_legacy. This is a choice about album grouping; it does not preserve artist favorites or ratings.
Use the new default grouping
If you are willing to adopt the new grouping behavior, leave the legacy setting unset and check the migrated library after its scan completes. The project does not promise that every collection will appear identically organized after the change, because grouping depends on its metadata and the new disambiguation logic.

New installation or established library?
| Situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Setting up Navidrome for the first time | You can start with the 0.55.0 metadata model and scanner without migrating an existing Navidrome database. Choose tagging and album organization that suit your collection. |
| Upgrading an established library | Back up the database, account for the loss of artist favorites and ratings, choose whether to preserve legacy album grouping, and allow the migration scan to finish before judging the result. |
How to upgrade safely
- Back up the Navidrome database. Keep a usable backup before changing versions.
- Choose album grouping before the upgrade. If you need the old behavior, configure
PID.Album="album_legacy"or setND_PID_ALBUM=album_legacybefore replacing the binary or updating the container. - Stop Navidrome. Do not replace a running server as part of the upgrade.
- Replace the binary or update the Docker image to version 0.55.0, following the method used for your installation.
- Start Navidrome and let the migration and full library scan complete. Startup migrates the database schema and triggers a full scan. The release notes advise waiting for the scan before relying on the data or reporting bugs. There is no universal scan duration; it depends on the library and system.
- Review the resulting library. Check album grouping, tags, playlists, and client behavior before treating the migrated collection as settled.
Configuration changes for existing operators
Version 0.55.0 renames or removes some settings and introduces new ones. Check your current configuration against the official configuration documentation linked from the release notes before upgrading.
| Old setting | 0.55.0 change |
|---|---|
ScanSchedule |
Renamed to Scanner.Schedule. |
Scanner.Extractor |
Removed. Navidrome now always uses TagLib for metadata extraction and no longer supports the ffmpeg extractor. |
Scanner.GenreSeparators |
Removed; use Tags.genre.Split. |
Scanner.GroupAlbumReleases |
Removed; use PID.Album. |
New settings include PID.Track, Scanner.Enabled, Scanner.WatcherWait, Scanner.ScanOnStartup, Subsonic.AppendSubtitle, Subsonic.ArtistParticipations, Subsonic.DefaultReportRealPath, Subsonic.LegacyClients, and Tags. Consult the configuration documentation for their current behavior and supported values rather than carrying forward assumptions from older versions.

What Navidrome is—and an important folder-browsing distinction
Navidrome is free, open-source, self-hosted music server software. It provides a web interface and a Subsonic-compatible API for third-party players. The project’s overview lists support for Linux, macOS, Windows, Docker, and Raspberry Pi, as well as multi-user libraries, playlists, library monitoring, and on-the-fly transcoding.
Navidrome does not browse the actual filesystem folders. Its API simulates folder browsing from tags in a structure such as /AlbumArtist/Album/01-Song.ext. If you expect a player to show literal folders exactly as they exist on disk, this distinction may affect your workflow.

Choosing a server and a compatible player
Self-hosting or managed hosting
You can run Navidrome on hardware you manage, including a Raspberry Pi; the project says official Raspberry Pi binaries are available, but does not specify a required model or promise capacity for a particular collection. The 0.55.0 release notes also point to PikaPods as a simple cloud-hosting option. They do not provide a cost or service-level comparison, so check current hosting details before choosing.
Finding a client app
Navidrome’s client directory lists apps that support OpenSubsonic across platforms. Depending on the app, features may include offline listening or car integration. Compatibility listings, availability, features, and pricing can change; check the live directory and the app’s own listing for current details.
