Adobe ended support after December 31, 2020, then began blocking Flash content from running in Flash Player on January 12, 2021. It no longer provides updates or security patches, and recommends uninstalling the software.
What “end of life” means for Flash Player
Adobe put two separate milestones in place: support ended after December 31, 2020, and playback blocking began on January 12, 2021. Adobe’s Flash Player end-of-life notice states, “We have retired Flash. Support for Flash ended on 31 December, 2020.”
After support ended, Adobe stopped issuing Flash Player updates and security patches. Adobe also says Flash content is blocked from running in Flash Player. Browser vendors were removing support as part of the same transition; Adobe cited Safari 14 on macOS, released in September 2020, as an example that no longer loads Flash Player or runs Flash content.
Why Adobe ended Flash
Adobe said open standards—including HTML5, WebGL, and WebAssembly—had matured, and browser vendors had integrated them while deprecating most other plug-ins. Adobe announced in July 2017 that it planned to stop updating and distributing Flash Player at the end of 2020, giving creators time to move Flash content to open formats. It said it coordinated the timing with major browser vendors and had provided more than three years’ advance notice.

Should you uninstall Flash Player?
Yes. Adobe strongly recommends uninstalling Flash Player, which may still be present on a computer. Use the uninstall prompt if available, or follow Adobe’s manual uninstall instructions for your operating system. The correct procedure depends on the operating system and how Flash Player was installed, so use Adobe’s end-of-life page to find the appropriate guidance rather than applying one procedure to every device.
Is it safe to download Flash Player now?
No unofficial download is a safe substitute for supported Flash Player. Adobe removed its Flash Player download pages and warns that unauthorized versions are a common source of malware and viruses. Since Adobe no longer issues security fixes, do not install an unofficial copy to try to restore ordinary browser playback.

What if an organization still depends on Flash?
Adobe’s April 2021 notice named HARMAN as a contact for enterprise customers seeking transition or licensing support. It also identified Zhongcheng as the distribution partner for mainland China, where Adobe said distribution and maintenance would continue for applicable environments. Those are historical, purpose- and geography-specific referrals—not confirmation of current services or terms. Organizations should verify availability directly before relying on either route; neither is a general recommendation for individual users.
If you need to preserve access to a particular legacy application or game, compatibility depends on that specific content. The end-of-life notice does not establish that any emulator or replacement will run it, so confirm support with the content provider or the organization responsible for the application.
