There is no single best VPN for everyone who browses the web. The right choice depends on whether you want privacy-focused policies, convenient everyday use, or protection for every app on your device—not just your browser. Compare each provider’s data practices and audit scope, test safeguards such as leak protection and a kill switch, and weigh the full subscription cost, including renewal.

What a VPN does—and what it does not

A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server and changes the IP address that websites see. That changes the route your traffic takes, but it does not remove the need to trust the VPN provider with information it can observe. A VPN also does not guarantee anonymity, stop a website from tracking you when you are logged in, or replace device security. TechRadar’s VPN explainer describes the basic connection and IP-masking function.

How to compare VPNs for everyday browsing

Start with the privacy policy and audit scope

“No logs” is a provider’s claim, not a guarantee. Read what data the service collects, what it says it does not collect, and whether an independent auditor examined the policy, apps, or infrastructure. An audit’s existence matters less than its date, scope, findings, and limitations. For example, RTINGS says the Proton VPN audit it reviewed excluded broader privacy policies and did not include access to the VPN software’s source code. That is RTINGS’ assessment of the materials it reviewed, not a blanket judgment about every audit or current policy. RTINGS’ VPN comparison discusses its privacy and data-handling criteria.

Check practical safeguards and performance

Look for protection against IP and DNS leaks, and find out how the kill switch behaves if the VPN connection drops. Protocol choices, app usability, server selection, and performance can matter as much as a feature list. Security.org says its 2026 testing checks IP and DNS leaks, kill-switch behavior, protocols, privacy policies, audits, speed, and subscription costs. Its methodology uses ten speed tests per VPN, averaging download, upload, and latency results for nearby and distant servers against a baseline. Those are Security.org’s test procedures, not a universal certification; results may vary with provider, device, platform, server, location, and network conditions. Decide whether you need browser-only or whole-device coverage

A browser extension can be convenient when you want to control traffic from one browser. But a Chrome VPN extension may function as a proxy for browser traffic rather than routing all traffic from the device through a full VPN app. If you want other apps covered too, check the provider’s description of the extension and use its full-device app where appropriate. Security.org explains the distinction in its guide to Chrome VPN extensions.

Rankings are not interchangeable: RTINGS puts particular weight on privacy and data handling, while Security.org describes a wider test set that includes performance and usability. Treat their lists as starting points, then check the factors that matter for your devices and location.

  • Choose a full VPN app if you need traffic from more than your browser covered.
  • Read the current privacy policy and check what an independent audit actually examined.
  • Confirm the app’s IP/DNS leak protections and what happens if the connection fails.
  • Consider performance and usability on your devices and from your location; published test results depend on their conditions.
  • Compare the complete billing commitment and renewal terms, not only the advertised monthly equivalent.
