Your Steam library is a good fit for Steam Deck if the games you actually care about work acceptably on its handheld screen and controls, and any essential multiplayer or travel games meet their anti-cheat and internet requirements. Check your shortlist title by title: a library’s overall size does not tell you whether its most important games will run smoothly or require setup.
Start with the games you actually want to play
Make a shortlist of the games you play most, titles you consider essential, and games you plan to buy soon. Then check those titles in Steam rather than treating every entry in a large library as equally important. A few Unsupported games that you rely on can matter more than dozens of games you rarely open; a long list of Unknown games means you will need more title-by-title checking.
Steam shows compatibility information in the Deck library and store, and lets you filter games by compatibility. Use the current listing for each important title: compatibility can change as Valve updates SteamOS and Proton and continues reviewing games.
What each Steam Deck compatibility rating means
| Rating | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve says the game works well on Deck out of the box against its handheld compatibility criteria. | A strong sign for straightforward play, but not a promise of a particular frame rate, image quality, battery life, or preferred settings. |
| Playable | The game works, but may require manual adjustments, such as choosing a community controller layout or using the touchscreen in a launcher. | Decide whether that setup friction is acceptable for a game you expect to play often. |
| Unsupported | Valve’s current label for a game it considers nonfunctional on Deck. | Do not count on it for an essential game without checking its current status. Valve says improvements to Deck can enable titles that were previously Unsupported. |
| Unknown | Valve has not checked the title. | Do not read this as either compatible or incompatible; look for current title-specific details, especially before buying or relying on it. |
Valve’s compatibility guidance says Verified games meet criteria covering controller input and appropriate icons, display support at 1280×800 or 1280×720 with legible text and suitable defaults, a seamless experience such as navigable launchers without compatibility warnings, and system support including Proton and anti-cheat. These checks help assess handheld usability; they do not establish a performance target.

Check multiplayer, anti-cheat, and launchers separately
For multiplayer games, the rating alone is not enough if the game’s current anti-cheat or publisher support is decisive to you. Valve’s Steamworks Proton documentation says Proton supports some common anti-cheat middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but individual titles need configuration. Valve says kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported and are not recommended. Check the specific game’s current compatibility details and publisher guidance rather than assuming a Windows multiplayer title will work.
Launchers can also affect how convenient a game is on a handheld. A game may be playable but require touchscreen navigation or other manual steps. If that would make a game frustrating to start or use, treat the friction as part of your compatibility decision, not as a minor technical footnote.

Decide whether offline play will work for your games
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says: “Once a game is installed on disk, you can play while Steam Deck is offline unless the game requires an internet connection.” Downloads and online multiplayer need a connection. For a flight, commute, or other unreliable connection, check each game’s launcher, DRM, and always-online rules; an offline-capable Deck does not make an online-required game playable without internet access.
Separate storage capacity from compatibility
If your shortlist includes more games than you want to keep installed at once, added local storage may be useful. Valve says Steam Deck supports microSD cards, formats a card for the device, and can boot from microSD; see the FAQ. A card can help you keep more games installed, but it cannot make an incompatible game work. Consider extra storage only if installed capacity is a real constraint.

Account for controls, screen, and where you play
Deck suitability is not only a launch check. Think about whether you want to play with handheld controls and the built-in display, or whether your preferred experience depends on a desk, larger screen, keyboard, and mouse. Valve’s compatibility criteria include controls and display legibility, but they cannot determine whether the handheld format suits your preferences.
Docking can provide desktop-style connectivity, but it is not a performance upgrade. Valve describes docking as similar to connecting a USB-C hub and says the Deck runs at full performance in portable mode. A dock can make a desk setup more convenient; it does not turn the Deck into a more powerful gaming PC. See the Steam Deck FAQ.
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Use this checklist to make the call
- Shortlist. Write down your most-played, must-play, and near-future games.
- Check ratings and details. Look each one up in Steam’s Deck library or store compatibility view; note whether it is Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown.
- Assess the friction. For Playable games, decide whether manual controls, touchscreen use, or launcher steps are acceptable.
- Verify multiplayer. For essential online games, confirm current anti-cheat and publisher support for that specific title.
- Plan for connectivity and capacity. Check offline rules for travel, then decide whether you need enough storage to keep more titles installed.
If your essential games are Verified or acceptably Playable, work with your preferred controls and screen, and do not depend on unsupported online or anti-cheat behavior, the Deck is a reasonable fit for your library. If a must-play title is Unsupported—or Unknown with no dependable current confirmation—make that uncertainty part of the decision rather than assuming it will work.
